United Nations Peacekeeping Operations (UNPKO) Group Build Idea

The fact that as of 30 Sept 2008, the United Nations have 88,754 peacekeepers stationed around the world is staggering. I am proposing a group build dedicated to the men and women of the 119 countries providing police, military observers and troops in support of global peacekeeping operations. I would propose a start date of January 1st, 2009 with an end date of October 24th, 2009, to coincide with the founding of the United Nations.

A listing of all current and past UN peacekeeping operations can be found here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_Nations_peacekeeping_missions

This group build would have the following requirements:

Any armor, aircraft, ship, or figure(s) representing a participating country in a UNPKO.

Any scale is welcome, from a 1/6th scale bust to a 1/720th scale warship.

Dioramas depicting events (checkpoints, etc) from a UNPKO are also welcome.

Any subject matter providing support roles for UNPKO are NOT eligible (US forces in Somalia operating under Operation Restore Hope, etc). Also, NATO troops not operating UNDER UN command are not eligible.

These PKOs run from 1960 to the present day, around the globe. Finding a subject should not be difficult, and even might teach us a thing or two about an obscure mission the UN had a part in. MANY of the items used by PKOs are US military equipment, etc. My view of group builds is that not only should you enjoy modeling the subject matter, but that you LEARN something about it as well, whether it’s a specific aircraft’s history (MiG Killers Group Build), or what a country used during a specific conflict.

If you are interested please post here. This is my first attempt at running a group build. I am on the forums daily, and I have seen group builds with great dialog that run smoothly, and I have seen those that die a slow and horrible death, with only a weekly “bump” post to try and keep it on the front page.

Thanks to all of you for considering this. I have a temporary badge designed. Here is my initial design:

I would be in for sure I have alot of kits that would fall under the UN emblem.

this does sound intresting. but what to build thats the question? you can count me in but i will let you know what i pick later.

I may join this one. I have the Academy KIFV kit that comes with UN markings for the Bos.

I am just curious. Would anything from the Bosnia/Kosovo conflict be allowed like an A-10 or one of the F-15s that bagged a Mig-29? The Wikipedia article is kind of vague on this.

The early portions of Bosnia were under UN auspices (UNPROFOR), but later switched to NATO command after several prominant incidents in 1995/1996(IFOR/SFOR). The Kosovo war was entirely under NATO command (KFOR).

yep know you can add me to this gb i will be building a leopard a26. i just accuried it from a trade on another site i go to.

were would you find a list of what the un uses these day

Yes I have that one too sitting around, the large time frame should allow me to get in this one !!!

Hey Stik I will look foward to watching and learning from yours,yo do some nice work !!

Hummmm.

I built a UN M-113 a couple years ago.

I think it’s time to build another UN vehicle.

A KFOR/SFOR/IFOR Bradley in Bosnia would kinda fun to build.

I would like to be in on this one too?

A very good idea! Do count me in!

Peacekeeping is not a job for soldiers, but only soldiers can do it.
- Dag Hammarskjöld (1905-1961), Former UN Secretary-General

In general, the equipment used by different UN forces are national equipment, just painted white for use in peacekeeping missions. In some cases the equipment are owned by UN, but I don’t know of any list so you can see what’s used. Maybe the best way is to check the different national defence (army, air force …) websites and see if you can find out something there.

I’m in! Absolutely!

I will just have to figure out what to build!
I can’t build everything I want. I have 16 planned UN builds (and 9 started), but after a bit of thinking, I have decided to add these to the GB:

  • Renault VAB 4 x4 - UNIFIL/France, Lebanon 1992 – Heller 79898 - 1/72
  • MiL Mi-24P Hind F - UNPROFOR/Ukraine, Croatia 1996 – Italeri 024 - 1/72
  • North American F-86F Sabre - ONUC/IEAF, Congo 1961 – Heller 277 - 1/72
