U.S. star insignia ?

Why did some U.S. WWII armor have a star with a broken circle around it?

The switch to a circled star was because from the air, a plain star could be mistaken for German cross. The circle helped it stand out more. The ones with a broken circle were a byproduct of using a stencil. The ones with a solid circle were factory applied decals. For the invasion of Sicily, the circle was painted yellow.

Never new about the yellow circle.don’t thing I’ve ever seen a model with that scheme

Thank you sir

I believe it was done because of the amount of captured equipment the Germans may have had and tried to duplicate US markings. If the US changed it to yellow during the invasion, pilots would know what to look for when targeting enemy armor.

That’s some good intel

Thanks for the info Rob. I didn’t know about the yellow either. It’s hard to see the yellow in a B&W photo.
