U.S.S. United States Monogram single piece hull build.

U.S.S. United States

Greetings all, this is my first post with pictures. It is the Monogram single piece hull USS United States sans the raised stern deck. I believe the scale is 1/240. I added tie down rope to the launch amidships and to the gig and other boats astern. I used the provided vac formed sails, painted them a light gray and painted the raised simulated reefing lines also. I do have the Heller shroud tool and have used it several times but in this case I just used the provided plastic shrouds and painted them black. I painted the ends of the guns red to simulate the tompions. The upper deck has simulated gun tackle that I also painted for added detail. On my current Lindberg Brig of war I may try expermenting with some simple real gun tackle. For the first time I also used a wooden base to mount the hull cradle to. Gave it two coats of stain and then poly. Fun project and I’m pleased with how it turned out. My fiance Alia has been having fun lately refinishing desks and tables and we used one for the photo shoot here. She repainted it and put some very very cool stencils on it.

Cheers!

Welll done - she looks wonderful!

She’s a beauty! Nice job!

Looks great!

Marry her!

That’s the plan!

Jonathan,

Great Job. That’s a Beautiful Model Ship! The plastic hull always had me curious. It was quite a feat back then for a 1 piece hull with a “hint” of Tumblehome.

I am impressed with your rigging. Excellent choice in thread too. You were brave to try the Kits sails. They turned out pretty darn good. (I would have recommended a fine tipped marker for the details on the sails and that’s my only suggestion.) You have a steady hand paining the Carriages for the Cannon too.

That model is really only 1/240 in scale and is real trouble for us who have the older eyes and thicker fingers. Congrats on a job well done.

Thanks for posting the Picture/LINK to your entire page. Great idea.

Going to do another Sailing ship?

Nino

Hi, thank you for the kind feedback. I discovered fine tip paint pens a week or so ago, after finishing the United States. They are awesome! I experimented painting the clew lines on the sails on an old Lindberg Constellation made for my dad years ago that desperately needed some tlc. It looks great. Will definitely be going that route in the future. I bought the wooden base for $1 at Michael’s and the bolts and acorn nuts from Menards. Had to cut the bolts down to fit and painted the acorn nuts brass but in retrospect should have painted them gold maybe. I absolutely love model sailing ships. Currently working on a Lindberg Brig of War, after that an old Life Like version of the Constellation. My fiance bought me the Heller 1/100 Victory. I plan to work on that in sections while building smaller models. Happy Modeling!

Looking very nice indeed…Cheers mark

Looks fantastic!! and good luck on the 1/100 Victory.
