MBT70, I don’t know about the Momsen Lung. Where is it supposed to be located?

It’s an emergency device that saved a lot of submariners in the early days of submarine rescue operations. Sailors inside a sunken submarine would put the rubber facepiece on (no clear eye screen) and then take a deep breath before going into a floodable chamber under the hatch. The chamber was flooded and the hatch opened and each man would rise slowly up a rope to the surface. Attached to the mask was a bag that would slowly inflate as the air in the man’s lungs expanded with the decreasing pressure, also helping him to float higher. If he needed air, he could breath some back in and then let it out again. The device was strictly emergency and worked well until something more sophistacted was designed.

That’s a nice model as well as the others you have posted. I build in 1/96 scale. The Momsen has no CIWS however. Keep up the good work.

Charles “Swede” Momsen is known for his rescue of the survivors of the USS SQUALUS in 1939 off the coast of New England, using a specially built rescue chamber that he designed. For a complete account, read “The Terrible Hours” by Peter Maas…excellent reading.

DDG_79, you’re building one in 1/96 scale? I wonder what brand is that and how long is the ship. I guess it’ll be about 120cm (4’) long,

I get the hulls from scale shipyard or sirmar. Sirmar has the flight IIA. It is roughly 65" and the structures are scratch built. I sell the structures in laser cut. I make most of my own fittings but do not sell them. These are radio control. I plan to build the Momsen and have built the Oscar Austin and Roosevelt. Currently working on a 85" LPD 17 USS San Antonio.

The Momsen is the second ship to get the RMS on the starboard. The entire CIWS section is removed from structure 2. The platform still remains in the front but no CIWS is placed. This goes for the rest of the line after the DDG91. Though the RMS is only on 3 or 4 and was welded shut and not used on the Nitze. Then it was not even built on the rest. The section was faulty with radar from what I was told.

65" is about 165cm, very long one! and 85" is even longer at 216cm! I’ve seen your Rooselvelt, very big and nice one. I’m thinking of buying an R/C warship I saw the other day. It’s named “Smasher”, about 2.5’ or 75 cm long and it resembles the Russian Sovremenny Class Destroyer. It comes complete with remote controller, batteries and charger, ready for action selling for just $26 - cheaper than most newly-released armor models!. It’ll be easier to carry to waterway for play.
