Two Sixes

One of these has been posted before, but I recently took pictures my two F-106s together hanging from my ceiling. Revell 1/48 that I got as gifts years ago. I finally finished the last one in mid January. It’d been sitting waiting for a gloss coat… then a warm spell came and I ran home for lunch to hit it with the airbrush of Micro-Sol Gloss coating. It wasn’t shiney enough for the later version '106. So when another warm day came, I went home for lunch again and overcoat the thing with Krylon Crystal Clear Glosscoat. Much better.

These models were modified to be inflight so the speed brakes were closed (they come in an open configuration) and the wheels are UP. The airplane with the missile bay open is the latest build and the later version of the F-106 with a “blown” canopy.

Oh yeah. I almost forgot… On the last one, I decided to omit the drop tanks. I liked the details of the pylons and shackles, so I carefully cut 'em out and cut some rectangular holes… there’s supposed to be four holes but I put in three… and then painted the shackles black.

I used Master Reaper brand acrylic paints as final color over Testors brand enamel grey primer.

I let all the raised detail just hang out in all it’s glory, then wet sanded the final color to expose the darker grey high spots. I like the technique. It looks dang swell!

I like pictures, you like pictures, so here’s some pictures:

Those look great flying together Trexx. I like the missile bay open. The red missiles stand out nicely against the ADC gray.

I can just picture a Badger off in the distance out ahead, about to meet his doom.

Very nice work Trexx!! Hope my F-102A turns out half that good! [tup] [tup] What color gray did you use?

Ken

Looking good, Trexx. I’ve always been partial to the six and have been wanting to add one or two to the case. I’m in a potential rip off on ebay at the moment over one I won back in December that the guy hasn’t sent yet. Won’t even return my emails.

Your’s look good and I think a deuce would be nice in there too.

They’re custom mixes of Reaper Master brand Icy Grey, Grey Mist, and Sky Blue… I mixed them to suit my taste.

The earlier version got a drop and a half of white in the matte overcoat. (That’s dcapponeII trick I learned from here) And the grey was originally mixed lighter than the later F-106 to be ‘more faded’. I wanted one to be about ten years older looking than the other to represent the span of time between the versions… And the NEW guy has an itchy trigger finger with his missiles at the ready!

Yes… I need an F-102 too. Gotta have the SLOW version! He, he, he…

Two to be proud of, that’s for sure. Thanks for sharing.

Regards, Rick

Aw man, Troy… You know, I’ve seen these models at Longs Drugs and Rite Aid for around $8!

The Dart is a beauty. I’ve been lucky to paw all over the real-deal at the California Aviation and Aerospace museum. It’s a mighty airplane, very large! Compared to my Mirage III (in progress) it’s half the size! …the same layout being a tailless delta but much smaller. All those old style electronics in the SIX weighed as much as a small car… then the missiles too! The Mirage is bare bones… less weight.

Do you lay on your bed looking up at them thinking your a SAM missile battery commander? LAUNCH NOW![;)]

Man, that is some fine work! I remember drooling over the first one, two in one shot is aces mate. [:D]
