The T-62 was the immediate threat the Swedish addressed with the STRV 103, or the S-tank.
The S-tank was infamous for its lack of ability to fire while moving but now I am reading that the T-62 suffered a similar inability, the spent case ejection mechanism only worked when the turret was aligned to the hull.
I am trying to get some information on Trumpeters offering but it is pretty sketchy with some really bad comments hanging arround.
What would be your take on the Trumpeter T-62, any information is greatly appreciated.
Johan, my response may not be what you wanted as I haven’t built this kit, but I’ve read 2-3 magazine articles and all had very positive reviews of the recent Trump T-62. One of the authors was noted historian/author/modeler Steve Zaloga and the only accuracy issues he noted was the angle of the rear plate (very minor) and the orientation of the commanders hatch (somewhat minor). I haven’t read anything bad about the kit although I recall one of the articles mentioned an issue with the roadwheels (?).
I’m no expert on accuracy, however I’ve just primed the Mod '62 kit and I have the Mod '72 kit in the stash.
I do believe there are some accuracy issues etc but there are various articles on the net which highlight these.
Not sure if we are allowed to mention other forum names and links here but another forum has a thread dedicated to “how to build a t-62” with various tips and info. If you interested pm me and I’ll send you the link.
As for the mod '62 kit I busy with, in my opinion it looks like a T-62 which is good enough for my needs.
I don’t recall any fit issues or having to use any filler and the quality of the plastic is great. Trumpeter have really up’d their game.
Problems I encountered:
Fuel tanks, I assembled them and only added their supports to the hull later. Bad idea as I got the orientation wrong and they ended up pointing the wrong way. Be careful there.
There are 2 options for the mantle where the barrel connects to the turret, the part numbers called out are swapped around. They are C7 and B14
There is a “ring” part B22, which fits the barrel and connects to the searchlight. The part was molded too small and doesn’t fit the metal barrel well. Another builder suggested that I cut the part at the 6 o’clock position to make it fit and then fill etc if needed. That worked, alternatively I think the Voyager PE set has a replacement part.
Other than that was a joy to build and is the most accurate 1/35 plastic styrene T-62 kit available.
Thank you very much for your input on this.
Rob - that Russian link is excellent - in fact I am so tempted now I think I am going to do this
I noticed there is a T-62 1972 available where the AA gun is included as well.
Today I got the Russian T62 Mod. 1972.
The box is packed with sprue’s and comes with 2 stencil options, a PE freet and a copper tow cable.
You get an optional turned aluminium barrel, separately molded tires and individual links.
There are optional markings for a Russian T-62 in overall green and an Iraq T-62 in sand and light green.
At the same price as 5 Big-Mac meals.
Hi,
here are some pictures and thoughts on the kit so far;
Main components, hull and tower
The turret has some nice cast structure, the mold seems arround the MG port will need some attention
Track links, individual non-working style. This weeks Desperate House Wifes sessions are safe and secured
The road wheels with separate “rubber”, the black isn’t rubber or vinyle but plastic.
I won’t fix the rear engine plate angel
I won’t worry about the missangled turret hatch
Bit I will drill out the barrel
And I will exchange the turret grab handles with wire
…and add some random stuff from the spares box where it seems appropriate…
Now to yesterdays 2 main question marks… #1. Does anyone have a reference picture to the pipe connections - seems to me that this is something that should be added.
2#. One of the build logs that I have read mentions the removal and repositioning of the fuel canister handles. Are the kit ones wrong?
Great stuff Hans,
It looks to me as if all 3 canisters where used connected in a series as you would normally do with batteries, which means that the mid one wasn’t connected to the the tank fuselage at all.
Many Thanks!
I wanted to share some progress with you on the T62 build so here we go;
Work on the main hull continues - right now I am trying to figure out what part of the electric wiring should be replaced.
The individual tracks have all been cleaned and are ready for the first assembly runs.
I havee also started to work on the turret;
Trumpeter should be acknowledged for trying to protect the fragile hand rails
But unfortunately in my example they had not been very successful
I was going to replace them with wire anyway so here is my first attempt at wire-bending
Then I drilled out the holes in the turret.
Trumpeter do not provide you with a lot of instruction here - “Make a hole”…
and here is a word of warning. I drilled the holes square to the turret surface sides which basically means that every hole has a different angle to horizontal.
The result is that the rails take a much to steep curve over the turret.
What I should have done is probably to decide on a common angle to horizontal.
I hope to be able to fix some of the mistake after that the LocTite has set.
So fare the build is great fun and I enjoy every moment of it [:P]
I hope to be able to get the latches and lugs in place later today so that I can start preshading the turret when my new Neo arrives from Chicago.
Thanks for stopping by and please comment and crticies
Very few tanks could accurately fire while on the move. Theoretically, every tank can fire while moving; hitting something other than the ground a mile away is a crap shoot while moving. Especially if the targeted tank is moving.
The M1 was the first US tank to incorporate a complete stabilization system in the design of the tank. Many previous US tanks had a gryo system that would keep the gun generally in the right direction, but the gunner had to fight the controls to keep the sights on the center mass of the target if their tank was moving.
Even the M60A3TTS tanks that were equipped with a stab system usually turned it off and only used it during gunnery for the moving tank engagement.
Accuracy improves exponentially for a tank that fires from the short halt.
Thank you for taking interest, your comments are very much appreciated
Been busy with the preparations for Santa’s annual visit last week but I will do what I can to bring this in on time for an update in Tigerman’s thread.
Anyway, here are a couple of pictures to show the progress to date;
I continued working on the tower and realised to late that there is a small problem with the instructions showing the right hand tie down brackets welded on to close to the spent shell ejection hatch.
This is a refernce picture from Rob’s link showing the correct position
I removed and repositioned and started to fill the grab handle holes with SG.
The turret sits on a widened part of the lower tube where a rail is welded on, probably to keep gear and feat from getting pulled under.
The area requires some filling so I used some of PE leftower to keep the mounting holes for the rail free from filler.
The upper hull is primed grey and is now about to be preshaded, the lower hull is primed in black waiting for the road wheel assemblies to be completed.
Your comments annd criticism is welcome as allways.
first of all please excuse the bad quality of the pictures pointed out by several, unfortunately even this is a question of learning by doing and I am afraid that I am in the start of the process [proplr]
I will use some more background light and a camera with a wider optic, but I am afraid that the problem is behind the camera [:$]
Anyway,
here is today’s headache, the cage for the headlights just does not look the part.
So I am closing the holes in the front and will try some more wire bending…
And I need to reach out to this community for help again;
Does anyone have a reference that shows if the barrels on the back have a piping connection to the main body.
The T-90 certainly does have this and ZVEZDA acutually provide this which I will use as reference if nothing else is available.
Secondly I wonder if anyone knows what this bracket does? Any ideas, I am stuck atm…
As always, your comments and criticism are welcome.
