Trumpeter MiG 17 build

Hi all.

I have been buse on and off with this Trump 1/32 MiG 17. I got this kit for a steal so I thought I’d give it a go

The detail is OK-ish, but needs a whole lot moe added to look good in this scale.

I added some hoses and cables from copper wire and the belts are PE leftovers

This aircraft was used by Lt. Adreano Bomba of the Mozambique AF to defect to Sout Africa during the early 80’s and this pic shows a SAAF F-1 AZ escorting him in.I will be doing it in the same colours

As you can see, this is a rather large model.

The fit of the parts were not great and I needed to fill the gaps in the wingroots with stretched sprue (hope it sands better than putty)

There are a few mistakes on this kit. The wings have cutouts just ahead of the ailerons, they shouldn’t be there, will fill them in and the front canopy was totally incorrect for a MiG 17. I had to cut out the front glass and shorten the sloped section. Re-glued it in and make new framing.

The detail in the UC bays and the speed brake bays are not good enough for 32nd scale and I will do some work with that.Trumpeter 1/32 MiG 17

For those who want to build this MiG, it took close to 40gr of lead to ensure it’s not a tail sitter.

Thanx for looking.

This is looking good I love soviet aircraft and have done a few 1/32 Migs. How is the fit on this model? It’s on my list of kits to buy. Also what airforce are you going to make it? Thats what I love about Migs, the sheer variety of colours.

I must say the fit is not as good as I expected, the wing and stab to fuselarge fit needs allot of work.I also had to sand down the wing fence allot as they were way to thick.

The kit does give the option to build the nice detailed engine and then you can split the fuse in the middle to show it off, but I don’t like this option. Will do the engine by itself.

It will be done in the same colours and decals as the one in my opening post. The colours seems to be a mixture of sky blue and light grey, depending on the light it is viewed in, rather confusing with no real good colour pix of the subject. Damn the SAAF for not taking better pix for us modlers fefore permanently disabling the plane and sending it back to Moz on a truck!

I have some pix of Russian MiG 17’s in a very pale blue, I would recon that this plane would be the same colour, although highly faded from the African sun. The Mozambique AF did not keep their plane under cover.

Appart from the national insignea and the # 21 there is basically no stencling on the plane. The language of Mozambique is Portugese anyway, so I doubt they would understand Russian. LOL!

I have added some bits to the UC bay and it is looking allot more busy.

Port main UC bay. The UC leg itself has quite alot of hoses attachet to it and I will put those on later.

The orange thing seems to be a hydrolic distrubutor cylinder going to the main UC actuator ram.

You can see the rather bulky rib that runs paralell to the leading edge. The Actuator ram attaches to this and I find it strange that Trump did not put this important piece in.

The painting will cause some interesting chalanges interms of trying to give a bit of “feel” to an otherwize bland monotone plane, hopefully pre-shading and a bit of staining/fadig will break it up a bit.
