Trumpeter Marking and paint guide

I’m attempting the Trumpeter USS Hornet full hull model. Not much in the instructions about painting substructures and a very confusing marking guide. It has some items like the white lines on the deck with no width or length measurements, but with a unfamiliar notation of 4 for the larger one and 3+3 for the smaller one.

Does anyone have insight as to what these numbers mean?

Exactly which Trumpeter Hornet kit?

It’s the 1/700 CV-8. Here’s the ‘guide’ in question. You can see numbers in other places for what might be hull markings, but what dimension in what scale do they refer to.

I think those might be decal numbers maybe? I don’t build ships but i don’t think those are measurements

I do waterlines backwards. I paint a band of the waterline colour and then put narrow tape over that for the line. Then paint the lower hull and put wide tape over that and paint the upper hull. It is much easier to get a narrow perfectly even line that way than trying to paint the hill colours first and then mask off with tape above and belkow it.

Arbitro, if you’ve gotten the recent “Ship Modelers’ Handbook” by FSM, there’s a great article on painting a waterline on a ship model.

From the description on the site I though it was mostly ships of sail, which I am no where near qualified. I download another about US ships.
