I have been wanting to build the infamous Bismarck since I began this addicting hobby. I have looked at a few kits and was set on the Revell Germany kit. Until Trumpeter released their new tool for the Bismarck in 2020. From the reviews I read and videos I saw it looked like a homerun. I couldnt click buy quick enough!
With that said I bought this kit for myself for xmas. Even had the old lady wrap it and place it under the tree. I officially started on the kit a couple of days ago and will use this thread as a detailed thread showing my progress and thoughts while building it.
Upon opening the box and a quick inspection of some of the sprues and hull I noticed that the detail on this kit is extraordinary. From the decking, to the hatches and even the hull detail. Everything in this kit sets itself apart from any of the other Trumpeter kits i have built in 1/350 scale.
Once thing to note is that there is a section missing on the lower bow of the hull. I am not sure why they did this, maybe some process through the injection molding. But it didnt make much sense. None the less, nothing a little tamiya putty and sandpaper couldnt fix.
And in case anyone was wondering, i am using the AK Interactives WW2 german naval paint set for the majority of the paint on this kit. With some of the other colors not included with the set being tamiya.
Thanks for sharing this. I bought the kit a few months ago but haven’t started it yet so I’ll be closely following your progress and hopefully learning. Based on my imnspection of the instructions and parts it looks like a home run.
Some more work on the Bismarck today. Starting on the hull camo and waterline. Some of the pics below show my process. Im sure others do it this way. but I kind of started doing it this way and ran with it. I use tamiya and 3m masking/painters tape and tape off everything except for the certain pattern and color I am doing. i will do one color at a time masking off the other areas as I go. Here are some pics to better show what i mean and show the progress so far.
I just realized that I havent updated this in some time. And to be honest, I have messed with any of my models in some time. Been super busy and recenetly packed all of my modeling stuff up because i will be moving soon. But here is currently where I sit with the progress on the Bismarck. All of the superstucture components are non painted and just dryfitted, checking for fitment along the way.
She is impressive so far! I have the Revell kit so I am very interested in following along. I do have one question about the kit. Does she have any lower hull detail, such as hull penetrations and openings? The Revell kit does.
