decided to do this first in order to get my painting sequence down before bigger builds. this will be all pz gray so a good opportunity to try out the COMART gray wash set and some dark rust. yhe plan is to use this to carry 280mm ammo for the K-5.
rails in front are O gauge i think and very close to the plastic ones. the basswood strips are 7mm x 7mm which looks like the correct width with enough depth to seat firmly in the clay base material and still have room for ballast.

thought i replied to this earlier. yes they are metal rails.
WIP. the holes for the pins have to be reamed out. you will probably split the bottom of them but it won’t be noticeable. DO NOT get any cement on the pins as the pieces have to move in order to fit them on the side bar.
wasn’t sure which way these squares go so i left them off until i built the playform.
started putting the car together. these are the wheels. primed and painted with MMA rust which was too shiny. i toned it down with a pastel mixture of brown, burnt umber, and a touch of golden ochre. scrubbed it in with a stiff brush. after that i rubbed in some black pastel. silver is VALLEJO AV aluminum brush painted.
think my cold is on the mend. got the frame and bed together. i added some additional bracing which won’t be seen when painted. some touch up and weathering before i add the end pieces. just remembered i have a piece that goes across the center so will have to razor saw a groove there.

feeling better and got a lot done today. still have touch up to do and decals before weathering. i haven’t build the couplers yet as they have to work. and air hoses will be after i decide what is being coupled to what.
Gondola is almost done. the side bars till need to be sanded a bit more so they slide in easier. that is why the sides aren’t flush and some of the brackets are not painted. they are removaable and i haven’t decided if they will be on or not. the color is VALLEJO AIR german gray with a couple of slightly lighter streaks along the bed where light armor would sit. it’s washed with artist oil burnt umber. the couplers fit together by thick paint on holes and pins so i can move them to couple to another car. the air hoses are not attached for the same reason.
the kit track will be replaced.
Here are final pics with home made rails. i will have a tutorial for this shortly. the gondola is empty because i haven’t decided how to use it. right now it will be offloading 280mm ammo for K-5 but i could use a 2x4 truck instead. base length vs width.
I don’t know the first thing about trains or train cars, Wayne, but I do know that I like the way that car looks. The weathering and even the new base make this look real to my eyes. This is an impressive piece of work.

Makes me think of having a go at a couple of, ? N scale? tank cars I picked up for some reason.

Scratch built railroad also looks good. How so parallel and consistent? Your painting and weathering of the materials look super realistic.
I have to ask though, no tie plates or spikes?

thank you. i am quite pleased with the results. given the next base will be over 3 feet long, i’m just not wasn’t planning on doing tie plates though i may have a friend resin cast some rail connectors for me. i do have spikes but didn’t need them to secure the rails. used superglue. will probably add spikes just to see how easy it will be. honestly, i just didn’t want to take the time but just thought of a way it might be easier to do plates. Thanks.
here is a pic of how i got them parallel. i blue tacked one rail and placed the other where i thought it should be and moved it until the wheels lined up, marked a couple of ties on each side and glued them down. the rails are heavy but the right size. the spacers are 39mm long. the rail is a real time 6 foot length, 1/35 is so much easier than 1/72. a mm or 2 of tolerance makes a difference.
PS was going to work on this tonight but CASABLANCA is on “I remember every detail, the Germans wore gray, you wore blue.” so will sand some parts on the K-5 ammo crane instead.

thanks for the push. this took an hour including painting the spikes after installing them (Vallejo Air German Redbrown). looks much better. may have a plan for fake plates too.
Should have checked this out earlier. that’s a nice looking build there and can’t wait to see the whole display once that big gun is done.

thanks, you have not been idle.[:D] as for the gun ME TOO. at least now i know i can knock out the entire 4 foot bed in a weekend, 64 ties, 384 spikes, 2 rails. may do the HobbyBoss 1/72 simultaneously. unless someone finds me some plans for a Vögele Turntable. i know there is a 1/72 resin one i could probably scratchbuild a section using as a guide but it isn’t in the budget.
I would love to do one of these big rail guns, but was thinking more along the lines of a 72nd one. But in 35th it would be very impressive.
And no, I don’t seem to have stopped much lately.
The HobbyBoss is better than the Hasagawa. the you can get the WR360 diesel to push it. laying track is much easier than it looks and well worth the extra time.
Thanks, I will look into that. Am I right in thinking the Hobby Boss is a much newer kit, I know the hase kit has been around a while.
