Well every Airfix 1/48th Lightning which i have made has always had these two parts to be fitted at the sides of the front wheel undercarriage, well can you guess it theres none for this Lightning so i had to make my own, yet again more scratchy building ! simple though.
Part numbers 140 and 142 are what you’ve got to make.
A simple Triangle shape is cut out simple you think not so ! Two edges are ‘feathered’ to form a kind of eliptical shape
The other part fitted i made this up in two parts and also shaped oval, very fiddly i lost count how many times these two parts went ‘ping’.
This air intake is also missing from the kit, when i say missing i really mean its not supplied, i scratch built this duct to look as near damn it whats on a real lightning, its made from srap sprue.
Added more detail to the seat, eg’ replaced the leg harnesses added extra’s straps / wheel at top of the seat, pull ring look at my fist picture of my seat and you’ll see the difference.
Oh and the seat is not being glued into the cockpit, just so i can take it out once in a while and smile.
Thanks guys/gals Makes all seem worthwhile when i get a few replies [#toast]
You’ll be pleased to know that i’ll be getting some new replacement decals in the next day or so and i’ve seen these new ones, theres no spelling mistakes whats so ever [yeah] also put on the first coat of silver which know everyone hates doing, LOL !
Noticed that there are no detailing parts for under the canopy as there should be as in this real picture, shame on you Trumpy surely you could have spoent a bit of time on the canopy.
The front leg has been altered in that i’ve drilled out 6 holes in the arm, Trumpeter just made ‘nipples’ to represent this and looked scrap.
I’ve used Tamiya acrylic silver goes on a dream, i’ll be doing a bit of a wash to high light all the detail.
Painted the wheel doors only for the silver to highlight the sink marks on the covers which i didn’t see before hand, might just fill them.
The inside of all the wheel doors are painted in Humbrol 56 matt aluminium.
The silver went on with no trouble at all, the part where it’s still grey is the part i’ve left unpainted so i get a good bond when the time comes for gluing the wings on.
Also spotted bad sink marks on the edges of the rear tail planes these i had to fill straight away [tdn]
I bought a considerable number of Trumpeter kits for the stash but have since cheerfully got rid of 90% of them. A friend of mine believes they have different teams working on different releases and that whether the final product is good or indifferent depends on who’se behind it.
I’ve got the Hobby Boss / Trump 1:72 F-105G in primer now but quality and build were such that I promptly got rid of the F-105D I bought at the same time. I have three Trumps left to build - can’t see me sinking any more cash into them unless they get the quality and accuracy issues solidly by the scruff.
Is the 1:32 Lightning pantographed up from the 1:72 kit (that I saw on sale for nearly £22.00 - flamin’ nora!)?
From what i’ve seen Steve looking at a 1/72nd Trump jobbo i would certainly say YES [sigh]
Producing a 1/72nd lightning with that sort of bland detail is is good enough but not at 1/32nd its a joke if i had seen the kit before hand up close i would never had brought it [censored]
Its £22 now they are kidding, sounds about the right price for a 1/32nd then. [soapbox]
New decals look good though, at least you can read em’ LOL [(-D]
Ian- Looking very good here! Could you tell me more about the Tamiya acrylic aluminum you are using? I have tried some of the Tamiya acrylic metal colors but didn’t like the finish I got with them. Yours looks spot-on indeed. How do you thin them? Wondering if you have trick up your sleeve for working with it.
Now, about those decals…
Hope you plan to keep the originals, as they would make a very interesting piece of artwork hung up in the workshop! [swg]
The Tamiya silver was mixed at about 50/50 with tamiya thinners thats all, maybe it was because it might have had a grey back ground.
I just used a single action airbrush to ‘blast’ it on LOL
Noticed that the pictures aren’t working [banghead] will be able to view them from the 18th febuary [soapbox] opened up a new account so i will carry on with the pictures.
Well guys,
I’m sorry that you can’t see any pictures i’ve reached my bandwidth and you won’t be able to view any pictures until the 18th febuary [B)] i’ve opened up a new account so i can continue to show my build [:-^].
As usual i always use Tamiya masking tape to give a very good edge and use food bags to cover the rest of the model, i don’t use paper any more because once paint soaked through the paper and stuck the paper to the model and nearly ruined it. Just a quick reminder for those who don’t know, eh ! i do all my modeling on a tray and have no work shop/room as such.
First coating of Humbrol 19 Gloss Red going on, it took five light coats to cover it evenly.
All the coats on and the masking tape off, no runs under the tape any where thankyou Tamiya !
FireStreaks finally finished, the black bands are decal strips.
Front wheel/hub strut all together with a wash on it.
For the wing tip lights i’ve drilled out them and added clear red/green into them, these will look alot nicer than being painted all red/green.
Front FOD guard completed, anyone know where i can get any suitable sized Decals so i can spell out BEWARE OF FOD ??.
Eduard ‘‘remove before flight’’ tags arrived today and will set the completed model off nicely.
Has anyone got any nice close up pictures of the nose of a Lightning, this must show the BLACK anti dazzle part as on a F1, i need to get this right as i’ve seen in the past where some modellers have totally done it wrong.
Made a start on the Main undercarriage legs ! i’ve added copper wire to depict brake piping.
Masked and painted the canopy/glazing, can anyone tell me what the little ‘shark fin’ is for on the canopy ??
Done a wash of light dirt to bring out the detail, this will be sen more when i give it a coat of Klear/Future.
Did a bit of a wash in the wheel wells aswell looked too clean.
Also gave the inboard flaps/stabl’ a bit of a wash [swg]
Started to do a bit of detail work on the fuselage… like altering the colour of some inspection covers though you really can’t tell by theses pictures ! why bother you say [:-^]
Quick reminder guys don’t forget if you have any good close upper shots of the ‘anti dazzle’ part on the nose.
Won’t be long before you can see the other pictures again [dinner]
Ian, as usual your work is amazing me. Love it. Thanks for the build photos, I will defently be using them whem when the F6 comes out. Also I heard from David at Flightpath that later this year they will be releasing a set for the Trum. Not sure what variants yet. But keep the pics comming!..Harv
More great progress Ian! Nice sharp edges on the paint work. [tup] I noticed you masked the canopy bits with Tamiya tape, then hand brushed the framing. I have tried this in the past with signifigant bleed under. What is your secret to using this technique?
Mike thankyou for taking your time in posting those beautiful pictures of the Lightnings, which are at cape town [tup] i just wish i could be there one day to see them go for it [bow] .
I needed close up pictures of the anti dazzle part, i have been sent this link which give you evey Lightnings from F1’s to F6’s…
I ensure the masking tape is thoroughly stuck down on the edges by using a cocktail stick, paying attention to corners where the tape cross’s over each over i then apply one thin coat first making sure its not too thick near to the edges of the masking tape, let it dry then repeat as before ensuring you brush in the direction of the frame, all my canopies are done this way even the good old favorite the Tamiya Lancaster is done this way, taken the masking tape off the canopies today and they look well smart [8D]
