Trumpeter 1/16 King Tiger II Ammunition.... The Return - paint colours

Hi Guys,

After my previous ammunition post and thanks to Doog (Thanks man [bow]) I have spent today doing some colour test on the KTII ammunition sprues. I first tried Vallejo Golden Olive and then Vallejo Olive Green (70967) which seems close to the photos Doog Provided this fits Ammo B (just need to sort out the yellow shell colour).

I then turned my attention to the other cases I really thought that I needed to distinguish between the other two types of shell. As it seems that towards the end of the war shell cases were made of steel as brass became scarce. I didn’t really want to use a proper steel or brass colour as I thought the brass would be too strong and after reviewing Doogs photos I had a brainwave and started rooting round my paint boxes and came up with what for me are just the right colours for the cases:

Tamiya Acrylic X-31 Titanium Gold

Tamiya Acrylic X-32 Titanium Silver

I think that I’ve hit the nail on the head here as the two metalics provide the right shade and also, I reckon, when on the model with the decals on will look just right.

Golden olive paint on the left, Olive on the right.

This is the titanuim gold

Titanuim Silver

I would be very interested to hear opinons from the learned people out there.

James

Hey James; while I wouldn’t necessarily consider myself “learned”, I can tell you that I like what I see! The green color looks great!

Don’t go crazy with over-thinking the yeppow color. I just simply added some white yellow (actually, add yellow t****o the white paint; you’ll use less!) and sprayed it. The key is to get close to the color–it would have been a varying shade anyway.

The “brass” ones look good too!

Hi James,

TOTAL neophyte here, at least as far as what was accurate at what time, but I have seen my share of large and small caliber ammunition, the brass looks dead on. The green looks good as well, I prefer the green on the right, but thtat is not based on any historical information.

James,

I’d go with the Titanium Gold over the Silver and stay with that for the brass. The green casings that you’ve created are actually the steel ones, they’ve been painted with a lacquer to create that color and protect the steel. Steel casings were parkerized which gave them a much darker color as as result, otherwise they’d rust/corrode and that’s never a good thing with shell casings and wouldn’t be shiny steel if they didn’t have the lacquer coating. See here for more information on Parkerizing courtesy of Wikipedia… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parkerize

[:D]—gettting some great data here !–THANKS GUYS!! thank you james, doog and bill–i am learning more here than in all the books i invested in that i can’t find time to read yet!–great info guys------tread[8D]

I spent 4 hours last night with my superglue Gel Control gluing bases to shells and got about half the load done WITHOUT a trip to A&E (Emergency Room to all the Yanks reading this) with various types of shell sticking to fingers. This is wonderful to me as it seems that I might be getting better using the stuff and the Gel Control versions means that I don’t have runs etc and I can put just the right amount in just the right place!

The last time I had a bad run in with Superglue I spent most of the evening sat in A&E with a very large wood ship hull stuck to one hand and trying to hide it from the rest of the queue. When the Nurse asked what was wrong with me all I had to do was hold one hand up…

Now… There are two bases short for Ammo B (PE-B1). This may not matter though as I think that there are racks for 14 of those shells while there are 16 on the sprue. This brings up the questions… is it an omission or not. is it deliberate or not and will we see the extra bases appear in the Porsche Turret Offering??

Now back to the bases and the painting. I’m hoping to get the ammo done for an update tomorrow.

James

Good work james…you need to get some de-bonder for those whoopsees!

There’s some very pretty girls at A&E… I’ll keep going!!!
