Trivia Series #9, Question #2

This aircraft had two three-blade rotors driven by a single engine engine mounted on either side of an existing airframe, and established various world records in the late 1930’s. The basic airframe was the fuselage and vertical tail of a biplane trainer with the forward cockpit faired over. Each rotor blade was made up of a tubular spar with plywood and fabric covering. Each of the counter rotating rotors was double-articulated, providing all the blade movements for an entirely successful helicopter. The undercarriage was of nosewheel type and a braced tailplane was carried on top of the fin. In 1937, it became the first manned helicopter in aviation
history to demonstrate many rotary flight characteristics and set several records. Due to it’s weight, it’s military role was limited and few were produced.
