Trivia Series #8, Question #3

This aircraft was a co-operation and liaison aircraft used in WWII. It achieved fame through its ability to operate from short, unprepared airstrips. They first entered service in 1938 and were initially used for propaganda and artillery spotting. It was of high wing, tail dragger design, with an unusual appearance and novel flight control features. Four regular squadrons were equipped with this aircraft and were put into action as spotters and light bombers. In spite of occasional victories, they made very easy targets unless escorted by fighters; due to heavy losses, it went to work operating air-sea rescue missions. It also served in a special intelligence and rescue missions, flying on moonless nights without navigation equipment. A total of 1,786 were built, and were used by several foreign countrys. All were withdrawn from service in 1946.
