Trivia Series #5, Question #5

This aircraft was a developed as a single seat, long range escort fighter that used a unique propulsion system. Two prototype aircraft were ordered in 1944, and the first was completed in 1945. It displayed very good handling characteristics, and thirteen pre-production aircraft were ordered; events in the war negated the need for long-range, high-speed escort fighters and the contract was canceled.

The two aircraft were returned to the manufacturer, a different engine was installed and flight testing resumed. However, the new engine engine was not able to produce sufficient power to improve performance significantly. The project was rapidly overshadowed by jet aircraft and was cancelled.
