Tornado of Operation Granby

I am about to start on my 1/48 Italeri Tornado. I am doing the Operation Granby aircraft and it is in a sand color but very different from the sand armor, closer to pink. What paint should i use or mix to achieve this shade?

The charts at IPMS Stockholm give this colour as “Desert Sand” FS:30279 A suggested equivalent is Humbrol #250

Humbrol #250 is the color. Testors Flat Tan in the small bottle is also a good match.

Would it not also be the colour used on the Tamiya Pink Panther Land Rover? That was a mixture of a couple of Tamiya paints.

A friend of mine crewed on Tornados during Granby. He said they were constantly repainting the aircraft and used a collection of different “pinks” as supply couldn’t keep up with the need for paint. The sand carried in the winds would literally sand-blast the paint off the fuselage on every trip. They used paint rollers mostly, for speed, and they weren’t too careful on the masking.

No, those Landrovers were an actual pink color, rather than the pinkish sand used on the Tornadoes in '91. (wow, that was almost 20 years ago now!)
