Does anyone know of a decal set for the movie “Top Gun” for the F-14? I’ve been talking to some of the guys that are regulars at the Trident Room at Naval Postgraduate School 2 of them are retired Tomcat pilots. When I showed them some of my F-18’s, F-14’s, and F-4’s they would really like to see me re-create the “Mig” which is an F-5 and the “Maverick-Goose” F-14 canopy to canopy shot, so they can hang it in the bar there. I’ve searched online to no avail. Some help would be great. I know there are tons of factual errors in this movie for instance “Iceman” and his RIO where VA-25 patches but that squadron was an A-7 and is now VFA-25 flying Hornets. Basically I need the pilots names and callsigns for the canopies.
Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell Lt (j.g) Nick “Goose” Bradshaw and I believe the mig pilots name was in a foreign language which I dont remember, but the squadron mav and goose were from was VF-1 Wolfpack you can find decals online for sure. Try TwoBobs
From thess studio promo shots, it looks like they were simple stencils.
They would be easy to make with home computer decal paper and a graphics program like PowerPoint.
Good luck.
Testors reboxed and issued several Fujimi kits at the time that the movie was in theaters. They came with markings that matched those in the film. They did the F-14, A-4, and F-5/“MiG”. These kits turn up on Ebay every so often.
Not Airplane but Top-Gun related:
Crank up Kenny Login’s 'Danger Zone’ to 11 to set the mood…
*Just noticed his last name is of the computer age… before its time!
There’s an article in the November 2006 FSM on building the movie jet. The patch used in the movie says VF-1 on it but it is a VA-25 patch.
See there is the problem VA-25 has only used A-7’s and F/A-18’s. They never operated F-14’s so VA-25 lo-viz decals are a bust. The only VA-1 decals I have found are high-viz bicentennial’s from 75’. the only other option I’ve found is creating them myself with photoshop, MS paint, and buying the USN 60 degree font for 20 bucks.
Have the kits in 1/72. Scanned in the decal sets but need to know if you still are looking for them and can use the high quality scans?
NoBoB
the Testors kit # 273 was the Top Gun boxing of the Italeri mold, the patch confusion was because they were fictional squadrons,“VFA-213” with the Fist of the Fleet emblem from VA-25, and “VF-1” with a bird emblem on a circle
The decal markings matched the aircraft used in the movie that the Navy leased them, right down to having both Modexes for Mav’s plane (early in movie, and then after Goose died)
I have the box and instructions, and have the decals, but, the decals are terribly yellowed from age,I bought 8 of them on sale for the plastic back when we could still get models at department stores.
let us know if you want any of this stuff?

edit: I just now noticed the date on this,he’s prolly sorted out what he needs by now
Ja, looks he’s been MIA since the beginning of September…
Ummm, if he waited a couple of years, he could get decals for…Top Gun 2!!!
Have been offline for a couple months my wife is on her way to being one of the first female American submariners. We’ve moved to Bangor, Wa, so modeling has been on the backburner for a while. I just flat blacked an AFV F-5 and a Hasegawa F-14a in low vis. Stuck it up in the corner, it looked great till a janitor decided he wanted it more than the NPS’ Trident room. Top Gun 2 sounds interesting hopefully they will shoot it similar to Band of Brothers or Generation Kill. Not lame, sappy, happy go lucky, naval aviators. :::Coughing::: “Bu**$#!%”
[:'(] but there wont be any Tomcats…
That’s what I said. Guess they’re gonna have to use the Super Bug. Oh and yes…Tom Cruise is going to be in it.
