This is the Revell 1/24 kit I’m doing for a nephew who races. I have built it oob except for adding .015 solder sparkplug wires. I have followed the kit recommendations for colors. I hate using glossy paints. The chassis is glossy light gull gray. I had trouble sprying it. The color ended up looking pebbly. Where I used a brush, it is glossy. I don’t know why the two pictures are so dark. They looked better in the camera. This is the 2nd car I’v done in 30 years. The other was Ernie Ervan’s Kodak car, which I also did for a relative.
Wayne, Revell sure has stepped up the quality of stock car kits. How’s this one? You look like you’re doing a good job on it. As for your paint problems, i’m not sure what to tell you. I haven’t sprayed too many glossy colors, but I do know that you have to get thin thin THIN coats of paint for the gloss to look nice. Maybe you layed it on a little thick? Keep us updated!
Hard to compare, as most of my experience is '50’s AMT curbside kits. I like the amount of individual parts, not a lot of lumps of plastic. And I liked the decals for the instrument panel. Lot of mold seams to clean up, but most were pretty easy.
Your pebbly paint problem is likely due to not enough finish applied. The best way to get a good glossy finish is to first spray a light “tack” coat. This is just a very light coat that will produce just enough color to change it from whatever color it was. The idea is to apply the tack coat and let it dry just enough to get sticky, then you want to apply an additional wet coat. The first tack coat’s stickiness will help the wet coat to adhere and prevent runs and such. To solve your problem (if you don’t want to respray it), you may be able to build up the finish with a few coats of gloss clear using the same tack coat method.
Finally got the car done. The white in the decals could be more opaque. I used the kit decals for the black around the windows. They didn’t lay down very well, despite many Microsol applications. Next time, I’ll use them as a mask. My nephew said he was happy with the car, anyway.
NICE JOB!!! I have that car on my to do list, my girlfriends a Tony fan…well she’s almost perfect!!! I’d like to build the car for the champion season, but still having trouble finding the decals ,guess slixx doesn’t carry nascar anymore. Well she doen’t HAVE to know its not the right one right !!!
