Hello from across the Baltic,I heard that EDUARD are making a set for the Sovremmeny 1/200. Now I will have to buy another one.
do you have an ETA on the Eduard set ?
I think Tom decided to cancel his Sovermenny set, since the sales of the kit didn’t justify the expense of the tooling. In converations with Tom (who is a close friend) he did mention he’s intending on doing a 1/350 set for the new Trumpeter kit.

should not be too long.
Ok thanks for the inside tip Jeff, i might just wait and see what the eduard looks like, the WEM kit is a bit to rich for my blood, or should i say wallet… hope the eduard will be cheaper. otherwice i gonna have a hard time justifying them 60£ for the WEM PE and guns…
Agreed Trekki, but still, when you consider the size of the ship and the magnitude of the project, it’s not that much in the grand scheme of things.
I have the WEM set, and Sovermenny is a major undertaking that will most likely take me the better part of a year. So…when you divide the cost by the amount of time you invest, it’s still cheaper than a woman…LMAO. (Looking over my shoulder watching for the wife).

He he, the girlfriend factor must be taken in consideration
when she gets wind of what the WEM set cost, it will take another 60£ of assorted gifts to keep the peace
Hmmm, never thought of that…apparently, Girlfriend 1.0 is more expensive to operate than Wife 1.0, but with Wife 1.0 comes the inevitable Children 2.0.1, which easily outweighs the cost of Girlfriend 1.0
Perhaps you should stick to Dog 1.5 and invest more into modeling!!
Jeff
Im currently running Cat 0.60 and Cat 5.0
They recuire less maintenense then Dogs, but are at the same time more prone randome destruction and general mayham…
its all about finding the balance (and figuring out the best way of sneeking new kits past your girlfriend)
hey guys ! . good to see i’m not the only one ‘doing’ the Sov. Yes i am guilty of including the WEM p.e. and resin turrets . the p&p almost cost as much as the parts,
i’m in Oz. i have a question…what color did you guys decide for the hull and boot ? All my references dont show ? Thanks .
Depends on whether you’re building it Chinese, Soviet or present-day Russki. I don’t know about the Chicoms, but I saw plenty Soviet warships with white boot and red hull, while the new trend seems to be white on green. Of course, those don’t give you the precise shade, name and bottle number by paint brand, but it’s a start … somebody smarter can jump in here any time …
thanks MBT70 , thats what i thought too , until I was shown pictures of Sovey in the North Sea with a ’ black ’ boot , this just added to confusion of my , then I was told that it depends where and in which sea / ocean it operates ! phew , sometimes I think i should stick to helis’[sigh]
Jeff, you ain’t kidding!!! I keep telling my modelling buddies mine will be finished in October in time for the UK IPMS National Championships. I am not saying WHICH October though… http://www.kipperboxes.co.uk/html/sovremenny.html
The 1:350 kit is much better, but there are still some heavy problems to sort out. All the walkways behind the missile tubes are still missing, there are several recesses in the deck houses not present, and the stack and hangar need a lot of work. The hull is a much better shape, especially the bow in plan view, and the fine detail mouldings are just excellent!
I wonder if they will do any more, a Udaloy, or a Krivak would be cool! Or a RN Type 23, or a Type 42, or a …
Hey, I’ve got enough on my bench to keep me busy 'til at least October!
Tim
He Tim, i just found yesterday you’re Sovremenny modification ! It already looks great ! I can’t wait for seeing the result at the end !
I’m also busy with a 1/200 Sovremenny.
I was planning to start airbrushing the hull and decks this week, buth after seeing you’re site, i printed it out totally and i’m gone study the modifications you already did, to see wich ones i can realize on my Sovremenny. I’m afraid it won’t be that much as you, i’m not new to modelling, buth the PE and putty is new for me ( the WEM PE is really great ! worth its money ! ) and bashing with plastic is totally new for me, and i’m afraid it won’t come out that good by me.
I had already placed the PE doors on the ship, and yesterday made the big PE radar, damn, that is really fine working !
I’m also planning to insert ligths into the bridge, and Tim’s guide shows a nice detailed inside of the bridge, i think i’m gone take that one over.
I mailed yesterday to Trumpeter to ask or they were planning a Moskva, Kiev or Krivak class ship in 1/200. That would be great !!! Or a Kuznetsov, buth think that one would be a little to big
Hi Falcon10, thanks for your kind words, I am glad the site was useful for you. I am really enjoying this model, even though I have already done loads more work than I originally thought was needed. Every time I check out something, it seems it needs some work done to it!!
Keep us posted with progress on your model, I’d love to see some pics if possible. I would be great to see some more model kits in this range. Let us know if Trumpeter reply!
Best wishes,
Tim
i’llpost some pics this eavening, i already made of lot of them, i’m mailing from time till time with Guido Hopp, who also has a very good Sovremenny guide, and he already helped me a lot with the ship.
I sure let you guys know the reply from Trumpeter as soon if i hear something from them.
BTW : for people who want 1/144 russian ships : http://www.ukrshipmodel.com.ua/IndexE.htm#Moscow
they have the Moskva ( 130 cm ), Kiev ( 187 cm ) and Kuznetsov ( 213 cm ) in that scale !! They are prefabricated, cost a lot of money, and there can be a lot of detailing been done more, buth damn, they look great !
i uploaded some pics :
In the meanwhile i already glued the PE doors on the ship, and thats abouth it
From yesterday the main radar is ready, the back radar has still to be made.
Also i’m looking now or i can make some changes to the ship, as Tim did with his Sovremenny, i’m thinkin abouth the walkthrougs below the heli deck and tha passway behind the missile launchers next to the bridge.
http://www.perthmilitarymodelling.com/newkitnews/trumpeter.htm
Ah well, no new 1:200 ship kits for a few months then… Never mind, I’ve got lots to do yet on the Sovremenny! I just updated my site, so for anyone interested, www.kipperboxes.co.uk and click the appropriate links!
Tim
oh, goodie goodie !!!Do i see there a 1/350 Kuznetsov !!! Sounds like a lot of fun ! Now only a Kiev
And a Typhoon in 1/200 or 1/350
And a Nimitz class carrier. Damn, my appartement is gone be to little
Nice update Tim, buth got 1 question : why are you doing that putty in the windows of the bridge ? Where the windows that you cut out not nice enough ? Or for what purpuse are you filling them again withh some putty ?
Also, i want to warn you abouth something, probly you already keep it in mind, buth to make sure : don’t glue the roof of the bridge already on the bridge. You have to paint the exterior of it. If you airbrush it, then you’re bridge will become grey inside when the paint fly’s thrue the open windows ! Or are you gone paint the ship ? Also : are you gone place glass into the windows ? Or ligths ? First do, before you you glue the roof onto the bridge.
I’ve yesterday finished the PE tower on the rear of the deck. Damn, that was a fine work ! It costed me 3 eavenings to complete that one ! I’m already afraid how long it takes for the front radar tower ! I already made the big radar on the front of that tower, the rear one is a little more difficult, and the rest of the tower still has to be made.
It’s fun, buth it takes a lot of time.
The paint job on the hull is rescheduled to somewhere unknown, thanks to you Tim ! ( damn you ), i’m planning to fill all gaps on the deck also with putty, like Tim, so the aditional parts fit nicer on the deck. Abouth the crosswalks below the deck, i’m still figuring out what to do with it. The bridge i’m gone let as is, only the interieur i’m planning to do as Tim did, its a nice detail.
Also i’m planning to glue the PE ladders over the plastic ones on the ship ( only the ones with no extra grips on the PE ), i noted if you scratch away the plastic of the ladders on the ship, and glue then the PE ladders with no extra grip onto the ship, it looks pretty flat, so i’m gone see now what it gives when you glue the PE ladders onto the plastic ones on the ship.
The places where PE ladders with extra grip on it have to be placed, there i’m gone scratch the plastic away.
