This might be a dumb question but I’m going to ask anyway. Is it possible to “tint” metalizers? (I use ModelMaster). I’d like to lighten and darken (very slightly) the flat aluminum (non-buffing). Can I just add some enamel?

Since Metallizer is a lacquer-based product, adding an enamel would result in a paint incompatibility, and the resultant mess would probably be not to your liking. In addition, Metallizers use actual metal particulates as the primary pigment suspended in a solvent vehicle, while most other lacquers/enamels use a colored pigment made from titanium dioxide (There are many exceptions to this, of course.) Just my opinion, but I don’t think Metallizers would mix well with other lacquers, either.
But, hey, what do I know? Try it and see what happens (lacquer/lacquer, not lacquer/enamel.)
BTW, you should be able to mix two metalllizers together without much problem. You could try a titanium/exhaust/gunmetal in your aluminum and see if that knocks it down a few shades.

There has been some recent discussion regarding the color of a base coat (like a primer for example) and how it will effect the top color of metal finishes. You may want to try a test part first with both black and white (or at least light and dark) primers used. Perhaps this will give you the desired color. I believe it was Swanny who did this for one of his models…

I have heard of people tinting Alclad with black or white…what do they use for that?? Acrylics?? Good question nonetheless Richardl…
I have had far better sucess using MM Crome silver (enamel) tinted with any desired color for my natural metal finishes. I learned this from FSM Author Pat Hawkey, believe me it works great and it’s easier than trying to play chemist with the metalizers.
