This is my first 1/144 armour model - a Tiger I Early from the Dragon “Panzer Korps” series.
It took a bit longer to complete than I thought, as the upper hull was badly warped and had to be clamped for nearly 24 hours whilst the glue set. However I think the final result was worth it!
I painted the tank in a standard Panzer Grey (Tamiya German Grey) scheme, with some weathering.
Unfortunately the second photo turned out rather dark, but the first one seems OK.
To give an idea of the tank’s size, here it is next to the 21st Century 1/18 Tiger! It’s barely the length of one roadwheel
(maybe I ought to put an aerial wire on it and make a “radio controlled tank” diorama with a 1/18 crew figure! It’s about the right size…)
and the Airfix 1/72 Tiger (not a very accurate model, but it was one of my first tank kits):
Next will probably be the Maus from the same box (the kits are sold as packs of 2) This will be a bit more challenging painting-wise, but should hopefully fit together better.
That pic with the 1/18 is pretty cool. You should do a pic with the 1/144 as a hood ornament on the 1/18.
In the Sturmtiger/Demolition Tiger set that I got the lower hulls are warped badly. Still haven’t glued them together but heres a pic with Dunkelgelb base coat. The Tiger and KT in the background are pre-builts.
Look forward to seeing your Maus. I’m gonna try and paint my Sturmtiger in a 3 color ambush scheme complete with the tini-tiny dots LOL [:p] I don’t mean to take away from your thread Drawde, just trying to add to it.
The KT and Tiger I Late look very impressive, I-beam - I’d like to see the other two when they’re painted.
Seems like the hull warping is a problem with all of the 1/144 Tigers. I also have the Sturmtiger, Bergetiger and Tiger I Late, unbuilt (I bought several of these kits as a cheap second-hand job lot) so I’ll check these to see if they have the same problem.
Large-scale models are my preferred subject, but I find these 1/144 kits are quite fun to build as you can actually finish them in a reasonable time frame, rather than spending weeks or months on superdetailing and researching paint schemes!
The later Dragon kits are really nice – generally better than the World Tank Museum ones. The Tiger II by Dragon is greatly superior to the one released for WTM.
I can’t see your pictures because they are free web-hosted, and we have websense here at work. I recall the Dragon Tiger I having an extremely warped rear hull, which looks like Godzilla stepped on the back of the tank. Is it still true, or did they fix it?
I’ve got the Challenger II they did, it’s a three or four piece kit (complete with PE!), as well as the Warrior – they came together in one set. I’m thinking of doing a KFOR diorama with the two vehicles parked outside a house. They are really exquisite little pieces.
The railway guns are beautiful models – handsome and very simple to put together, they’d make terrific and really satisfying weekend projects. They even come with figures.
