I found a great deal of info on this particular group, but I would really like to know is were their tigers early, mid or late types??? I found a site that has individual tanks what they had as far as jacks, tool boxes, headlights, spare tracks but it didn’t say what type of tank it actually. Can anyone help? I believe they took part in Operation Zitadelle in Russia in 43’ correct? Any help is appreciated.
I believe they were the early version. Can you share the site? I would love to take a look at it.
Thanks,
Ted
They are early model Tigers. They operated to the north of Kursk, in and around Orel. Typical camo was broad stripes of red-brown over dark yellow base. Many vehicles had large unditching logs or beams slung on the sides. Some had barbed wire fastened to the sides to prevent Ivan from climbing onboard. The 505th destroyed more than 60 Russian tanks in the battle for hill 274.5 for the loss of 5 Tigers.
I also would like to see that site as I am building a Kursk Tiger from Zitadelle as well
Thanks! Going to have to free up some time to look through all that!!
Hope that link works for you guys. I just found it yesterday. There is a link in there that has unit #'s color schemes etc… for a bunch of tigers operating in Normandy also part of the 101st ssPzAbt. Links in there for operations in Kursk in 1943, a lot of good info. Thanks for the help also guys.
COOL!!!
Thanks,
Ted
Ted- is this going to make you declare tomorrow DECEMBER 1st???
Jason, no doubt. Which site has the info on the 505? I have been reading up on them for my build and would like to do a tiger from them. I believe they modified the fenders and lights, and thus makes them stand out.
I may be wrong
Ted
I’m looking at a bunch of photos of 505th Tigers, but I’m not seeing anything unusual about their mud flaps or fenders, at least from what I can see. Many of them are missing their headlights entirely, either removed or lost in action, I can’t really tell. Maybe these modifaction occurred on later vehicles, as I am only looking at the early ones?
Perhaps it was the 501? I am not at home and don’t have my books. I will look it up later and verify.
Ted
Thats what I was trying to find out about was the 505th. I saw some photo’s from operation Zitadelle with the #311 I believe but I also saw the same # on a tank from the 101st in Normandy, may not mean anything though, could be two totally different tanks. I would like to build four maybe five tigers all from the 505th with varying number which is why I started checking all this stuff out, trying to get the real numbers from tanks that were there.
Ted, I think you are thinking of the 501st, which did have alternate headlight placement and treadplate on the reshaped front mudguards.
I have photos of # II, 214, 114, 233, 321 and 221 that I can find now, probably others if I look for them.
Man, I just can’t find the site with the Kursk info.
Peridexion,
You are right. Sorry about the mix up.
Ted
A little more info for you.
Thanks Nemisis
You guys are welcome, and thanks for your help also.
