I am currently building Dragon’s Initial Production Tiger 1 kit. It would be a shame to complete it without droping an aftermarket engine in it, but I haven’t seen one made specifically for this kit yet. I know someone has by now tried one of the engines currently on the market. Just wanted to see if anyone had any luck and what fit best. Please let me know.
I have one of these for a 1/35 Tamiya Tiger I but not sure if it would work in a Dragon/DML. Its Verlinden #1370 that gives you the engine, radiators, cooling fans, gastank, rear plate, new engine decks and some other things. The engine looks pretty darn detailed (I haven’t built this yet, just waitin for the right Tiger to try it with) although its missing some of the lines you see in pictures. I’m looking at the instructions now and it says this is for just the Tamiya Tiger but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work in a Dragon provided the interior spaces are similar enough. You might have to do a little bit of modifying. Its a pretty cool kit but I probably should have just bought the engine kit alone. I seriously doubt you’d be able to see thru the engine decks well enough on a 1/35 to see much of the gastanks and radiators. Its kinda funny but by looking for this kit I found a Jordi Rubio metal Tiger I barrel and another Verlinden Tiger I detail kit I totally forgot I had!
Well so for theres not a engine made specifically for this kit.The engine used in the intial production tiger would be the Maybach HL 210 P45 engine.Which has three air filters on it.http://www.alanhamby.com/maybach.html Verlinden use to make this engine, but I havent been able to find one lately myswelf. So im not sure they still make it. So what I did was, I used the engine out of my Academy Tiger wich is the right engine for the intial production tigers with the three air filters. Are you can scratch build one.
Well, I may not have the correct number of air filters, but here is my installation of the Verlinden set into the DML Tiger 1 initial…it does work:

The problem with the Verlinden set is that they provide no plumbing. The Tamiya set provides just the “top” of the engine, but does have plumbing. I scratched my hoses from 1/8" shrink tubing and parts from the Tamiya engine set.

Great link there Kernop. Some terrific pictures of both engines. Slipped my mind that early Tigers had a different engine with the 3 aircleaners. If you had an Academy Tiger I with the right engine you could cast molds and have two engines again. Also another suggestion for constructing the extra plumbing. You could try wire for the crosslink and solder for the hoses…
I just finished my Initial Tiger from DML. I used the old Tamiya engine kit, and plumbed it out a little. The only problem was, I didn’t know about the three air filters till after I had the engine in the kit. Too late now to change it. Oh well, live and learn.

A word of caution:
For my current Sturmtiger I bought 3 different engines : a Verlinden, A Tank Workshop and a ceramic one from hungary (don’t ask). Both are highly detailed but the Verlinden had an oval flywheel, the TWS one has innacurate exhaust covers, but overall the TWS one is better

Hi Steve
The Verlinden engine you got can you let me have the ref number if you have it please.
The one i got from verlinden is diffrent to yours as mine has all of the tanks that run along the rear of the engine compartment.
Many thanks Alan[banghead]
I think we have the same thing Alan, You get a PE engine compt wall(s) and an oil tank and a resin engine, right?. But, no piping for the air intake fans etc.
Steve
hey kernop-- that is a cool link[:D]–i really enjoy reading about the technology of days gone past-- you would think with all the ‘forward’ thinking they could of put a package together that didnt break down so often and had more power(for the size and weight of the vehichles)it had to be in–the 210 was o.k. for the panther but for tiger and tiger II (even the 230 upgrade) was inadequate-- sorry i am kinda off topic-- treadwell-- enjoyed the link!-- p.s. parks-- nice photos and build !-- initial tiger looks real good[8D]
I often thought the same thing treadwell why they didnt come up with a better engine for the tiger. Parks and Crockett your engines builds looks great! Even if its not the right engine, you guys have done some great work there on your initial DML Tiger builds. I put the right engine in mine, but i didnt do all the extra work with the plumbing you guys did, that makes you guys engine look way better then my work.Nice builds[tup]
Hi Steve
Thats the one, just thought that i had missed one or they had brought out a new one. Ok many thanks Steve. Looks like its going to be another great build if the other one in the photo is anything to go by. many thanks once again. Alan
Alan,
You bet, I bought both the Tamiya and the Verlinden sets to get my engine compartment done, plus some scratched hoses as well. Good luck my friend.
