Tie Fighter Color

Hi, I would like to ask you fella’s as to what color did you airbrush your finemold’s Tie fighter since as to what their instruction sheet said that the color is FS36495 and in the city I live, we don’t have any reference of this color. The only paint that is available here is only Tamiya. Any of you guys painted this wonderful model using Tamiya? Thanks for any input.

FS 36495 is often called “Light grey” by paint makers, I think Tamiya code is XF14.

Don’t worry about colour accuracy it is not like someone can step up to the real thing to compare colours.

I sprayed my Darth Vader Tie fighter in Tamiya pale blue which was a very close match to the photo I have in the Lucasfilms Archives Book. When photographed, the model took on the same grey hue as the original did on the big screen

I’d go along with that. The light greyish blue turns a light grey under those studio lamps.

i almost don’t want to say this because it never turns out well when i do, but here goes- there is a correct color and you can walk up to the original and see it. sci-fi modeling is fantastic because you can inject your imagination into it and really do what you want and not be wrong but there are accurate depictions and there are not so accurate depictions

I would say it depends if you want a REPLICA of the studio model or something based on the actual movie.

I would go with the Fine Molds recommendation for the colour as I think it is supposed to depict the craft as shown in the movie and not the studio model. And I don’t think it would have been okayed if George Lucas wasn’t happy with the colour recommendation, he is very closely involved with Fine Molds and they need his approval for EVERYTHING.

As for walking up to the real thing, it has been discussed already manufacturers colour only applies to the new item, take the same car/bike and let people own them for some time and you will see 3 different colours.
