I bought some jars of Gunze-Sangyo paint (Mr. Hobby) to try since they are acrylic and they have lots of pre-mixed colours that Tamiya doesn’t have. There are no thinning recommendations on the jar, and the paint actually looks like it could be sprayed right outof the bottle. Do you folks thin these paints, if so, wht do you use? Water? Alcohol? What proportions?
Isopropyl alcohol is the way to thin with the acrylic version of Gunze, someone on another msg board said some of his Russian modeling friends actually use Vodka to thin it… [;)] Wonder if they wear a respirator or breathe it right up?
I would think the 91% Iso would be the one you would want to use… less water in it…
i have used GSI acrylic paints for a long time now, and i have used lots of methods of thinning it but i found the 2 best to be: distilled water with some winsor and newton acrylic retarder.OR for an easier way, and most effective for me is just use Tamiya Acrylic thinner. yes, tamiya. even if i mix both GSI and Tamiya acrylics…then mix tamiya thinner it will still work perfectly. GSI acrylics are thicker than Tamiya’s, so you will have to use a bit more to thin it. .
P.S.
for proportions try 2:1 or 5:3 for GSI with tamiya acrylic thinner. just look for the “milk” consistency when thinning.
