Hi all, i have recently just completed a 1/700 build and i have a problem.
After painting the model, i applied Tamiya black panel wash. Then I dabbed a cotton swab with Mr colour Thinner 110(or 120 not sure) to wipe off the excess wash. That’s when i realised that the paint are all coming off on the cotton swab.
Prior to painting, I never primed the model. And I’m using Tamiya acrylic rattle can as the main coat. I did not used any gloss coat after spraying either. But I did let the paint cure for more then 2 days. Is that the reason why the thinner is eating away my paint?
I have seen from Youtube that alot of modellers use thinner to wipe off excess wash without any issue but not for my case.
Any insight will be greatly appreciated.

I’m thinking Mr Thinner thinner is lacquer thinner. You don’t generally use lacquer thinner to wash away panels. I’ll let someone who use those actual products you mention take it from there, I don’t.
Tamiya spray cans aren’t acrylic, they’re a “synthetic lacquer”.
Tamiya panel line wash is an enamel based system and requires an enamel thinner. I haven’t used Tamiya spray cans in many years, but I believe that they can be cleaned up with regular enamel thinner, so either way, without an acrylic based clearcoat over the base paint, you’re toasted.
As mentioned above, Mr Color thinner (the number is unimportant, the “110” is the amount of thinner in the jar -110ml) is a lacquer thinner, and though it’s relatively mild compared to hardware store LT’s, it will eat basically any model paint.
Thanks for the insight guys, now i can see where the problem is. I’m using the wrong thinner - Should have used enamel thinner instead of laquer thinnner. And there’s no clear coat to protect my paint. Looked up and I guess I need to get the Tamiya X-20 thinner and X-22 clear coat then.
For wiping enamel or oil washes I use odorless mineral spirits personally. Very lightly dampened tissue seems to work. FWIW Windsor Newton now has a line of oil paints that is water clean up ( just putting it out there).
Alrite so I proceeded to get myself a bottle of tamiya thinner. And to my dismay when I reached home, I realised I bought the X20 enamel thinner instead of the X20a acrylic thinner. Can it be used to wipe away the excess wash? And I’m also planning my first airbrush, using my existing tamiya acrylic paint. Can I use the X20 to thin the paint or do I need to get the X20A instead?
