Thinking of Building Minicraft Titannic

My Heller Victory will be finished in a few months and now I am thinking about building the Titannic which is a departure from what I usually build (Sailing Ships).

Any suggestions or advise will be helpful.

What version are you buiding? Is it the “older” minicraft or the newer one?

Jake

I have not bought the kit yet but it will be the newer one I’m sure,

I built the older one and wasn’t happy with it. Inaccuarcies abound, poor overall fit, and ejection pin marks EVERYWHERE! It took me forever to finish, GMM’s P/E set helped the look’s alot. Big Jake is pretty much the expert on that kit here, I has published an online article that will help ALOT!

Quesney,
I finished the academy titanic about a year ago for my father-in-law ( it was a group project) and was an excellent kit. It comes with a one piece hull, and the fit was really good. I also added PE from Toms modelworks, and it turned out excellent, was a nice build, and didnt have any major fit problems. I would recomend this kit, its a good one.

Hi, Just looking around the site and noticed your post. I am presently building the Academy kit right now. You should know you have your work cut out for you. Although the kit has had the changes made there is still a moutain of items that need to be addressed for you to build a accurate model. There is a web site called Titanic-model.com this site is exclusively for people who want to built the Titanic, no matter what the size. I suggest you check it out. Strongly suggest. If you are just going to build straight out of the box the kit will give you a very good replica of the ship. If you want to make it accurate one then you need to go to to site mentioned above. There is an incrediable amount of info on how to super-detail this kit, includeing making interiors for parts of the ship. You can go to the Rivit counter at the site and printout the whole manual, the whole manual from start to finish is somewhere around 300 pages!. That is a guess cause I’m not through printing it all out myself.I am building this for a customer and he wants a extremely accurate replica of her, and it cannot be done without this site. All Photo-etch information is also included at the site. Everything you need to kanow about the ship is there from rain gutters to the floor mats at the entrances on the boat deck. Well good luck if you have any more questions I would be happy to help. E-mail me at webberernie@yahoo.com or webberernie@aol.com .[:)]

I haven’t built any kits of her, but I am a Titanic buff and I’ve just been over to titanic-model.com. Let me second MYRA’s recommendation, that site is a marvel. I can’t imagine building any serious Titanic model without using their references; I’d use at least the page on paint colors…

…if nothing else.

The Workbench Review of the Minicraft 1:350 kit (http://www.finescale.com/fsm/default.aspx?c=a&id=132) mentions a lot of fit problems and soft detail, but also says “the overall clunky look of the model was wonderfully transformed by the addition of the photoetched parts.” Between the kit PE and the stuff you can get from places like Tom’s and Gold Medal (including a set of figures from GMM if you’re looking for a diorama) I can’t see it turning out badly; if you’re willing to go to the expense, it could be tremendous.

Academy makes one in 1:400 scale, too.

A) Buy the Updated Minicraft Kit
B) Buy the Iron Shipwright’s Photo-etched set (It’s made to fit the Minicraft Kit)
