Thining Kustom Kolor paints.

Has anyone thined Kustom Kolors paints with anything other that there thinner? The reason I ask is I’m almost out and need to thin for airbrushing and lhs no longer carries this line. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Who makes those paints? I have not heard of them.

I haven’t used the Kustom Kolor line but if you have a little you can experiment with, try thinning some with lacquer thinner. You can order those paints from Coast Airbrush. They also sell the complete line of House of Kolor paints and will sell most of them in small quantities(unreduced) from 1oz up. They’re pretty friendly, you could get in touch with them through the website and ask directly. They’re also the ONLY dealer authorized by HOK to sell their paints in small quantities.

Kustom Kolors are from Valspar and House of Kolor. It’s a line of enamels created for hobbyists. The spray cans were an acrylic lacquer but they plan to change to the same enamels used in the bottled paints. Probably already have. They use the same pigments as other HOK paints, just a different carrier that’s more plastic friendly.

HOK an enamel for hobbyists? I thought HOK was uros?

Yes, the Kustom Kolors line of House of Kolor paints is acrylic enamel. Some people claim that they aren’t real HOK paints and that Valspar just tacked the name on for brand recognition but they are real, just not the same formulation as their automotive paints. At least according to Robert Baugh at Valspar:

"Kustom Kolor is not House of Kolor packaged into small Glass Jars. There is a reason for this, Urethanes tend not to like Polystyrene and Lexan, plus the solvent package that House of Kolor uses is the strongest solvent package in the traditional Automotive paint industry, This makes the above mentioned plastics turn into goop real nice.

I know that modelers have been putting House of Kolor on Plastic models for many years, but the solvents in them are designed to be sprayed with a respirator and in a paint booth, not in your house.

Valspar took a much friendlier modified acrylic urethane enamel resin blend and solvent package to make a base that would fulfill the hobby industry’s desires. Then we placed the House of Kolor Pigments into that base so that the modelers would get the colors that they like.

For the time being the aerosols are acrylic lacquers, however we are moving the chemistry to the same as the 1 ounce liquid line due to the benefits of a reformulation that give the product excellent adhesion and flexibility to plastics without the need to prime."

An excerpt from emails we exchanged a couple months back, reprinted with his permission. No one in my area sells them and with the holidays and everything I just never got around to ordering any. I have more paint than I know what to do with now.

I just got back from the Walmart in Peachtree City (Ga) with 20 assorted bottles of the 1 oz. House of Kolor/Kustom Kolors. They have the Valspar name on them. I originally saw them last year in packs of 6. They had “military” colors, metallics, pearls and crazy bright colors. They even had glow in the dark. They were clearancing everything so I got the bottles for $1 each. That was a better steal than the $1 testors 1/4 oz. bottles. I picked up all the pearl/ flip flop colors, even though cars with that paint style aren’t my thing…all the military, most of the metallics and some of the super bright colors. Should I stock up on these paints?? They had a whole bunch more…

Never buy from a company that intentionally misspells something to try and be cute.

I wish that rule of thumb applied to all these rappers with the intentionally misspelled names…Or is that mizpell-d??? [banghead]

For your information, House Of Kolor paints are some of the finest paints in the world and are used widely by some of the country’s top airbrush artists.

Thanks for having my back Mike!!! I’ll send a free bottle LOL[;)]

Just one? [(-D]

Tell that to the children of those artists who see the misspelling and fail their spelling tests!!! How are they going to get into a good Kollege now!!!???!!!

Well, guess we’re going to have get Jon Kosmoski over here to kick butt now…
