Looks like we’re filling the active duty roster pretty well. I’m in with a 1/48 scale Hasegawa P-40N. I’m not sure what markings yet, I’ll have to check the ol’ decal binder when I get home.
Great looking work so far, guys. Steve, may I ask what you use the sledge hammer for? Is that in case one of your creations turns on you?
You beat me to that one. What could a hammer that big possibly be doing a modeling table?
I just thought I’d say, this is the first Hasagawa kit I’ve done anything with, and I really like the quality so far. Especially the instrument panel, lots of detail.
My only complaint is no seat belts. I may have to start some AM searching. And I’ve got a Walk Around book coming from the LHS.
Nothing worthy of pics yet, I just started putting the cockpit together last night. I’ll put up pics after I get some paint on it, hopefully tonight or tomorrow.
Doesn’t everyone have one of those on the bench? [%-)]
Now and again I’ll be posting images and/or links here in the thread to serve as both reference and as inspiration. I’ll also try to fill any requests that ya’ll may have; either send me a PM or shout it out here in the thread. Here’s the first installment…
This shot of a P-40F is merely for inspiration!

For those who are working on a P-40E and need cockpit reference, go to the bottom of this page from my P-40 site and click on the cockpit photo to see more interior shots of Kittyhawk I AK803.
That particular P-40 is more or less a fairly stock example. It had a wing change at one time, but is otherwise original. This ship was built for the RAF and then handed over to the RCAF… so it had Sutton harnesses. But otherwise it’s probably very much like its USAAF counterparts.
With the exception of the cushions (I think), some paint touch ups here and there, and a replaced instrument or three, the cockpit in AK803 truly is a vision of time standing still…
Yeah, he bought it at an auction in 1946… for $50! He put a bid in for another at $60, but was outbid. Too bad they can’t afford to put it back into the air… or maybe that’s a good thing. That Hawk is close to being a time capsule… I’d love to see it with my own eyes someday…
I was looking at the photo of “0597”, and can’t quite see the radio antenna. Do you know if that aircraft has the standard P-40E wires running from the vertical tail to the wingtips? If it does, do you have a photo showing where those attach to the wings? TIA!
Strange coincidence, Darren, but I’m finishing up Wing Commander Gibbes’s Kittyhawk right now!
I just might have to join this group build, just need to decide which P-40 to build next. I might post a ‘survey’ later to get some input from you other folks. It’s also a good thing this is the ‘Neverending build,’ because I have to not only finish the Kittyhawk but my AM B-25 as well.
Speaking of Bobby Gibbes, anyone know how I can get a copy of his autobiography, “You Live But Once?” I’d be eternally grateful for any help on this.
Thanks guys! I am very happy with the pre-shade effect, the photo makes the grey look darker than it really is but I am still trying to sort out my camera. I think it has more going on inside of it than my home computer!
Greg- [#oops] I forgot to put on the tail! Actually, the profiles I have seen of the O.D. P-40E’s show the rudder O.D. over the whole surface, so instead of masking it off I decided to leave it off and paint it separately.
Very nice work there, Frank!! [tup] In fact, seeing that was enough to twist my arm that extra little bit. I’d like to chime in with a 1/72 Hasegawa P-40N. I’ll be adding a TD resin ‘pit, wheels, some Eduard PE, and Aeromaster markings of J.B. Paris’ mount…so PM inbound! [:D]
Happy to be aboard, buddy! Braille-scale is not my usual thing, but while the eyes and the hands are still willing and able, I’d like to give it another shot. [;)]
