Does anyone have any good reference photos of the antenna attachment points on a P-40E near the top of the vertical fin and the points on the wingtips? I see the antennas there in my references, but cannot find a good photo showing exactly where on the wing tip they are located. Also, did all of them have antennas going to both wingtips, or only one? [sigh]

Okay, time to show what I’ve done so far. Not much, but a start. I’ve built up the cockpit and some miscellaneous stuff like the tail and some of the parts that go on the bottom of the wings. I guess I can go ahead and build the ordinance too.
I’ve got all the interior parts painted in MM Acryl zinc chromate green, and I’ll try to start on some cockpit detail tomorrow. It’s way too late tonight and I’m getting a headache, so the little stuff is a no-go.
And thanks for the cockpit photos Steve! I’m gonna try to detail out mine using those, so wish me luck. Being the rookie, I hope I don’t bring the group down a notch. [:)]

LOL Just kiddin’. I’m sure you’ll do okay, but just remember, everyone is a rookie of some sort at some point in time…
I do have a piece of advice for you, however. Regarding the insert for the rear quarter glass area behind the cockpit… you may find it better to attach each half of the insert to its respective fuselage half and then put the fuselage halves together, instead of putting the fuselage and insert together separately. You may want to tape the pieces together and do a dry-fit to see which option will work best for you.
I would have recommended the same thing for the rear fuselage halves, but I see you’ve already got them together. That shouldn’t be much of a problem, but some folks have experienced trouble doing it the way they say in the instructions. Again, do a dry fit once you get the forward fuselage halves together and see how it all comes together. Don’t hesitate to give a shout if you run into trouble and need some opinions. I’ve got several of those kits and can hack one together to try and help you solve any problems that may come up.

Darren… I have never seen the antenna wire going to the horizontal stabs and the wings. But that will look very cool on a model.
And now the plead for help from Mr. O’Reno. I have had some recent run ins with a particular decal maker… one that you yourself (me too) have recently referred to as “Errormaster”. I want to do “Bob’s Robin” flown by Bob Vaught for a couple of reasons. I gotta have a P-40 with teeth. And the other is it seemed a bit more interesting that the nat’l insignia has a green background. But at least AM (or EM as the case may be) says they are not sure if the green is correct… or if the art is on both sides of the fuselage. And as long as I am asking for the world… I have also seen it depicted with the scoop black and not green. Any info you can impart will be greatly appreciated.

I looked through the two Detail and Scale books on the P-40 (Vol. 61 and 62), and here are some photos I picked from there showing some antenna details. These are pretty good photo references, but some of the drawings are not as good as other Detail and Scale drawings I have, IMHO. They cover everything from the XP-36 to the XP-40Q, so that is nice.
There seen to be about as many antenna configurations as there are P-40’s, so as usual, work from photos and make your best guess. The wing tip close-ups are from the AFM’s P-36, and near as I can figure the antenna mast showed up for the first time on some P-40E’s, but I wouldn’t say that is for sure. Perhaps Steve has more information on this subject.
There is a third type of fuselage top antenna location with only one attachment instead of two, and I think there was also sometimes an insulator on the right side of the aft fuselage, I couldn’t find good photos of those.

Hi all, i feel like a little down as ive just finished mine. I kinda like the banter that goes into these GB’s. The kit was a Hasa P40N. I thought the standard Decals looked a bit bland and really wanted the sharks mouth version. I looked on Eswine and found these by Techmod. I had a pear of a time with the Mouth. The decals are so thin. Just trying to move them slightly while floating on Microset caused nightmares. The colours are for the P40N-5 CAF? ‘White 663’ of Capt Wang Kuang Fu, CACW’s 7th FS, 3rd FG, Laohow, Chine January 1945.
I hope you like it. Like someone told me, these buggers have more seems than it seems possible. Keep your sanding sticks ready and if you needed any practise rescribing. Nows your chance.

I loved the camo too Tabasco, What with the wavy green round the edges and the sharks mouth…I was hooked. I must have been taken to some degree as this is only the 2nd, Non Luftwaffe plane ive ever done.

Thanks Mark! I painted the topside colors this weekend, instead of preshading I followed the base color with a little darker version 'round some of the panel lines and natural shadow areas.

Just looking on this bird I realized that : would it be easier (and safer) to close the canopy and paint the whole bird and than take the canopy and open it up ?
I am a bit warry about the cockpit - putting all those papertowel stuff inside … may brake something easily.
Using the whatever-TAC would let close the canopy, paint the whole thing and be on a safe side.
What do you think ?
