The Official F4U Corsair Group Build 4/01/08 - rolling end date

Steven- Man, that’s a bummer! Hope things turn around soon. Perhaps just taking a breather might help. [tup]

Joe- Sounds like a very rough year you have had, hope things continue to improve for you. I am also glad to see you found your way back.

padakr - That Corsair is looking very nice. I would not stress out about the alternating pins on the wing. It looks fantastic with them up or down. What kit is that, I belive I would like to build one myself ? Looking forward to your next progress report [tup]

Sean - it is Revell’s 1/48 Corsair F4U-4:

I’m finishing up filling gaps and then I will mask. Next step is to go to my LHS to pick up paint and thinner for my airbrush (which is brand new to me, so it will be interesting to see what I end up with).

Paul

Seems like I joined this GB a long time ago (perhaps even in a galaxy far, far away) but am only now finding the time to begin work on it. My initial choice for this GB was the old Monogram kit in 1/48 but my example turned out to be an incredibly brittle one and shattered when I started building it back in the spring. I turned my attention to other GBs while this went on the back burner. When I got to looking at my replacement kit, the Tamiya -1D with moto tug, I determined that (a) I wanted to build that Navy bird with the wings folded, but (b) I also wanted to build it with the wings extended. So (b) led to picking up another copy of this kit, well, it was the -1A but in inspecting the contents of both boxes they are almost the exact same kit (the -1A has some extra parts that I believe would be used for the Birdcage version).

I’ve started the R-2800s for both kits and put down most of the interior green paint. The engines still need to have the finishing paint put on and weathering, and I’ve yet to really begin the interior washes.

F4U-1A

F4U-1D

I hope to have both of these builds completed by the end of the year (and I’ve taken off from Dec 19 through Jan 4 to give me plenty of time to do so).

Looking good Aggieman! You’re correct, some extra parts in the -1A kit for the birdcage version. The -1D has some extra parts in it for the -1A as well. [tup]

Glad to see I’m not the only one doing twins! [swg]

Joe-

Unfortunately, no. Photos here must have a url address, so must be hosted somewhere on the web. I use photobucket, as it is free and easy to use. HTH! [tup]

I have a completed version of this kit in my closet that I built almost 30 yrs ago under the Monogram lable. This was one of many kits that used to be on the self at the local grocery store that I used to get once I got paid my allowance. I hope to send some pics of this model, complete with dust from hanging on my bedroom ceiling fro over 15 yrs, along with my 1/32 Corsair I built for this BG once I am home long enough to shoot some pics. I am still traveling a lot for both work and the holidays which is why I have been absent from the GB.

Great work everyone. It is great to see this GB has so much positive momentum.

Regards,

Scott

[(-D] [(-D] [:-^] That R/C Corsair Gold is the reason for the Trumpeter kit I have ! I bought it for the pit details so I could dress up the R/C version instead of a sparse dash and blackout. I should of just bought some reference books instead [(-D]

Joe that kit is a dream to build, I was so impressed I built another after completing the first. I have been hunting for the TopFlite FW-190 OOP, got any leads on one ?

I have built the Top Flight Gold addition, also the Royal .60, which for detail, cannot be beat. My final Corsair .60 is the one Pica release before going out of business. This kit was closer to “fun scale” but the dimensions are simular to the Top Flight.

Pica [tup][tup] Those were fantastic kits, I really miss my FW-190 of that vintage. Scott - I still have some “Royal Stickers” if you want one for your flight box ! Oh and the most important thanks for stopping in, hope you get back yo the bench soon [:)][yeah]

DId not do any modeling today but did a Frozen 27 mile mountain bike ride. It was 25* when I left out and it did not get any warmer. After I wow’ed the neighbors unloading my bike with my cold wear spandex I had another outstanding project lined up. I brought out my sawzall and started cutting a hole in the side of the house. I had been planning on doing that this summer but had put it off. Now my spraybooth vents out the side of the house instead of the window.

VentDont fret my fellow GB’ers my bench never looks this clean. I just mucked everything over to the building side and cropped it out. [(-D] The way I figure now with a hole in this wall the room can never be converted into a guestroom for the mother ~in~law [tup]

Great work Guys!!! All builds are looking great!![tup]

Summit,

That is the sexiest workbench I have ever seen.

[bow]

[(-D] Thanks darth_trader I will have to muck off the building side and enclose a photo of it.

Well I had a near panic attack with the Corsair this morning, As I was test fitting the little hinge covers one fell deep into the wing. After some very careful tipping , turning and inverting I spied it. I was able to pluck it out with a pair of skinny tweezers. To prevent this from happening again I rolled little “handles” out of masking tape and stuck to them. Now I know whuy I have seen several planes missing these covers…

Thanks Sean, I hope to be home around Thursday but will be away again for about a week from the 8th. I am hoping to get pics uploaded to this site. I am happy on how my latest 1/32 Corsair turned out, even if the kit was more a toy than a model kit.

Have a happy holiday.

The long holiday weekend is ending but I was able to get a lot of work on my twin builds.

I am building both OOB with only some additional wiring detailing (brake lines, engine wiring, and probably some hydraulic lines that I see in some photos of Corsairs with their wings in the folded position).

F4U-1A - used the kit decal for the IP, put down two separate washes, one black and the other dark tan (tan only in the wheel well areas). Put the entire fuselage together and mounted the engine, and attached the wing stubs.

F4U-1D - used the kit decal for this one as well and did lighter washes, and essentially completed it to the same point of the 1A.
