Do any of you remember the Monogram armor kits from the '70’s that came with a page or sometimes even booklet on how to incorporate your completed model in a diorama?
I realize that I’m an old fart, but do any of the rest of you remember those, and if so, what were the ones you remember?
Also, do any of you know where copies of those old sheets can be found?
I remember them distinctly. They had 4 or 5 pages and were full of ideas and had a ton of pictures. It’s been a while but I do remember a Sherman w/hedgerow cutter, the Ostwind in a dio set in Arnhem w/ British Paras and a US 6x6 truck. I guess you could find the kits on E-bay, other than that I don’t know.
I still have the booklet that came with my 1/48th Monogram B-17. It’s a Shep Paine dio, if I remember, with a flak-busted, crash-landed '17 sitting at the edge of the tarmac, one wheel buckled under, prop twisted, crew staring and pointing, and one flight crewman staring at the ding in his flak helmet…
I wonder where that thing is…I saw the booklet just a few days ago…
Slightly off Topic- anyone remember the Monogram dio kits that had either a Tiger and a Thunderbolt or I think a Sherman with a Stuka? Both came with a dio base and a cheapie piece of plastic to support the plane and create a “Tank hunter” dio?? The tiger was my first ever armor kit and my memories are faded, but still there
Oh ya I cut my teeth on those kits. Our little town had a D&C store with the models on the back wall.Shep Paine’s How to books have alot of those pictures in there.I remember the Sherman ones, in the hedgerow and the winter one with the rocket launchers.Wow, that was thirty some years ago.I can almost smell the popcorn in the D&C store!!!
The Sherman in the hedgerow with the knocked out german machine gun position was the first diorama I ever tried to make. What a mess, but as a 10 year old, I was in heaven!!!
I also remember they had one of the C-47 in 1/48 scale. It came with 10 or 12 paratroopers and it was a monster. I remember being determined to replicate that dio, but realized it would have taken up half of my room!!LOL
Never built 'em, but the LHS has the Panther/P-47 (or was it a P-51?) “Tank Hunter” kit.
As for the supercool Monogram Shep Paine dio hints sheets, yup, got 'em all! Those things were great, and went a loooong way towards improving my modelling in my formative years.
I didn’t build armor back then, just planes (a misspent youth), So I don’t remember those dois. I do remember the B-17 and I believe it was a Dauntless or Devastator sinking with the crew deploying a liferaft.
Man that brings back memories. I was always on the lookout for sawdust to make the field for the 17. You’d be hard pressed to find a circular saw back then, so I spent a lot of time (and blisters) running a hand saw back and forth across any scrap I could find to make sawdust for Shep Paine grass.
Probaby spent about a day waiting for the blue resin to set on the other dio, seemed like forever.
Those were so cool.
I still have a bunch of both the aircraft and armor ones. Think I have all of the American Armor except the M-48, Grant, Lee and Shermans. Know I have a few of the German ones also.
Aircraft I have the B-24, B-17, P-61, C-47, Do-335, and B-25 (think that is it).
