Is there any distributor off hand that you know of that has pre-cut clear circles for 1/72 and 1/48 scale aircraft to simulate spinning props?
Mate,
I’ve no idea bout pre-cut clear discs…but there’s a company called Prob-Blur that sells etched brass blurred props in 1/72 and 1/48th scale.
They might have just what you need.
Good luck!
That’s cool! I might use that instead.
I’ve seen a few of them, in person. At a few feet they look fantastic, up close, it’s kinda wierd, almost confusing to the eye, but, no matter where you view them from, they beat the hell out of the clear disc IMO.
Spinning prop replication is hard for me to be happy with because in most cases in flight an airplane’s propeller just isn’t visible. Blurring the blades does represent what a camera might see at a higher shutter speed, but it’s not what your eye will see. My favorite method is to photograph the model at a very slow shutter speed with the prop turning and that works well for an idling engine on the ground, that’s what it will look like to your eye. At high rpm only a highly polished front of a prop lit by the sun will be apparent. That’s why they put the yellow tips on the blades, but even they are hardly visible if at all at high rpm. They are really only effective at idle. So for an inflight display I think it is more effective to just remove the blades from the hubs. Unless of course you intent is to replicate a photo, then some of the prop blur methods may be to your taste.
