Model was base coated in Tamiya Acrylics over a week ago. Glosscote was added 3 days later for adding decals. 3 days ago I sprayed another coat of Gloss to seal the decals. Today I sprayed on a light coat of the abovenamed … only to see this happen before my eyes:
My last build, an Academy Warrior which was painted in Model Master Enamel went the same way. At first I blamed the MM paint as it was very thin in the jar, now I am not so sure… who needs paint stripper?
… and yes the whole interior is painted in cluding the scratchbuilt Ammo rack, gun tool box, second radio set, etc…
O M G[:(]----- you have a problem of incompatability between the base coats and top coats— iv’e bever seen an acrylic lift like that [:O]–if you stay with one brand and one type(acrylic, enamel or lacquer) that should NEVER happen— good luck-- [:D]-- sorry to see that happen-- treadwell
Yikes! [:0] I’ve used lacqer with acrylic before (Tamiya lacquer to prime followed by Tamiya acrylic paints, and then by MM flat clear acryl) and have never seen this kind of thing happen. Is it possible to strip it all off? I’ve heard that brake fluid will do it but that would likely seep in and ruin any interior paint you have. Perhaps brushing it on and gradually stripping as opposed to soaking? I’m sure someone has an answer for rescuing this. Hope it all works out.
ghamilt - that’s cause the flat coat that was applied was only a light coat!
Treadwell, never had problems before I bought this particular can of Flatcoat. Same can used on 2 builds - one enamel painted, one acrylic painted- both cracked like blazes. Mr Goldfinger to James Bond, “Once is happenstance, twice is coincidence, but three times is enemy action.” I ain’t waiting for a 3rd time, pre-emptive strike taken out, Flatcoat in the bin.
Buff, hope so. I scratched a lot of the interior for this - lotta blood and sweat, now tears, gone into it:
Copterguy, I use oven cleaner for stripping. The oven cleaner is sprayed on and left for a while, but as it doesn’t require a bath, and the hatches and turret ring are masked, it shouldn’t strip the interior (I hope at least - the warrior was closed up, no interior to worry about). I just need to be very careful not to get any inside when I rinse it off.
Been there, done that. [xx(] Actually my bad was on an airliner kit where I got really bad orange peel on the FINAL glosscote [xx(]
I can still see it. Perfect paint work, perfect masking, perfect NMF on the belly, perfect white on the top, perfect decals, first gloss cote perfect, second gloss cote perfect, ah what the hey put another gloss coat on. Then right before my eyes it starts. First on the nose. Then it spreads down the fuselage and onto the wings. Quick grab the fire extinquisher, water, something. Can’t talk, want to scream, everything moving slowwwwly. Arrrrrggggg!!! Nightmare!!! Happy Halloween everybody [:D][:p][B)]
all i can say is i hope to never feel the pain this must be causing you man–it looks like such a nice build[8D]-- i hope u can save it-- and if u do – let us know how!-- [:P][yeah]-- good luck again – treadwell
Yea Thats gota hurt all that time and money put into it and all coused by a darn companeys paint. but sort of looks like old age hit it real fast many some oil of olay might help. Sorry had to say that.
Had that happen with their glosscoat on a black stock car. All decalled and this was to be the final coat.
The paint wrinkled up like no tomorrow yet the part with the decals didn’t even flinch!
Last time I ever used Testor’s flat/gloss coats!
You have my sympathies but I think it could still be salvaged.
If the clear coats haven’t gone all the way through the Tamiya acrylic base coats to the plastic, you should be able to get the whole lot off with a rag dipped in alcohol (denatured or Iso). Might take a little work, but it should be possible.
oh the humanity, the horror, it must have took a ton of self control to grab the camera and not the hammer petbat, hope it strips easy and clean for you because it looks like it will be a damn fine build,
if you can find it i just stripped the wings on my Dr1 tripe with a product called Grafetti Gone it’s a spray designed to remove spray paints it doesn’t smell as bad as oven cleaner and is not as irritating if you can get it on your skin i found it at my local hardware store ( a Home Depot chain store it was with the spray paint )
good luck with the rescue [C):-)][tup]
I had this happen with Alclad II and Testors gloss. Both are laquers but something was not right with the chemical compatibility. My MiG-17 was trashed! I use Future for the gloss and Future mixed with Tamiya Flat Base for the flat coats now. Takes some getting the hang of the mixtures, but well worth it!
If only Future was available in Australia Mark [:(]. We have a Johnsons product called 'Pledge One go" which used to be a Future equivalent, but the formula is different; Pledge is yellow not clear, and it sure doesn’t work like Future is supposed to… try Pledge with Tamiya Flat and you get one scary iced over effect. The two do not combine well and separate when sprayed and left to dry -Tried that on an Achilles TD and then on some old kits as practice
Biffa - I’m getting rather good at stripping kits so the hammer was only the second thing to reach for after the camera [:D])
Panzer W, will look out for it, but like Future I have my doubts it will be in Oz either.
Well the oven cleaner has been washed off. Only minor damage to the white paint on the firewall inside which, with a little luck, won’t be difficult to mask off and respray. Despite my best efforts, it seems 2 of the etch rear wheel guard hinges have disapperared. Was careful to rinse the kit in a bucket and strain all the water to recover the dislodged PE - one side effect of Caustic based cleaners is that it heats up the kit and can cause the cyano to give way. One hinge might have gone AWOL when I brushed the soapy water over the outside to clean off any cleaner residue. When it is dry, probably tomorrow, I’ll post another pic of the outcome.
As I understand it, one of the Aussie IPMS guys imports Future for the local modelling community. Maybe if you put a shout in the Aussie Modellers thread, someone can put you in touch with the person concerned.
