The Conquistador, my first ship model

I started this build last year but stopped due to work etc, this is the Heller Conquistador #L875 1/90th scale, while it’s a fairly easy model it did have problems with fitting the aft cabins, this the type that Cortez may have used but I believe there was some imagining on the part of the makers of this kit, I plan to build a an ocean storm diorama abit like the box art shows, I still have a long way to go and would like to add HO scale sailors to give life to this model. hope you like it my first photo posting. Very nice! Would love to see this done up in the waves like you mentioned. I think a ship similar to this was one of the first kits I ever made with my dad when I was about 6 or 7 years old. Had to take it outside to glue b/c my mom said the liquid cement was toxic and it freaked me out a bit.

I like that first shot with the storm cloud backdrop.

Should look nice with some little HO guys!

would you mind posting larger pictures?

Sure, once I figure out how to do it, haven’t done photos yet…Karl

The stormy backdrop was made by using rattle can spray paint white and gray and just randomly spraying on a white cardboard, the windows were made from PE mesh fitted into the windows then CA’d in place, then put some Elmer’s white glue on the mesh from inside and when the Elmer’s dried I had clear windows. I really doubt that with this arrangement of living quarters this ship would have made a safe voyage, but it’s a fun model and that’s what counts. Karl

Thanks guys, I’ve been watching this board for awhile now and must say all here are very dedicated and skilled model builders and while this is my first attempt at this great hobby I just enjoy being able to give ideas and share them with you, and more photos is on the way. Karl

I’ve purchased some HO scale banisters from the local hobby shop, from Grandt Line # 5035 turned spindle rail, I then painted them Testors Light Brown Enamel # 1133to give it that polished look of a classy section of the ship for the paying passengers, I’m now in search of items for the deck like crates, barrels and other assorted items manny of I can make myself, enjoy the photos. Karl

The plans don’t have banisters in these locations, this gives the ship more creditiblity. Karl

Again very nice build.Try Hobby Lobby or Michaels for barrels and such. I look in there wood areas also the doll house area for miniture parts like that.

…I am suddenly reminded of the Ogre’s ship in the movie ‘Time Bandits’…!

Thank you, I’ll check Michaels out. Karl
