"The Aviator"- You gonna see it?

It is very true this movie does not have aircraft first in mind. (More of a stylized biography where the aircraft are a piece of the backdrop.) However, two things draw me to see it nonetheless:

-The big explosion where Huges crashes that P-38 lookalike. (I forget the designation. Planned as a WWII recon aircraft.)

A black and white screenshot in a newspaper movie review with- in the background and just able to be dicerned- the Spruce Goose herself! (Okay, maybe her computer-generated cousin. [:D] )

Is there a possibility of that short but sweet flight of the world’s largest aircraft making it into the movie? I sure hope so! (I’ll grit my teeth through the other bits. Hey, I did it with “Pearl Harbor”!)

If it didn’t have Leonardo DiCaprio I’d think about it but I can’t stand him.

I’ll wait for the DVD…

I’ll wait for the world premier on network TV.

Regards, Rick

Guys, it has airplanes AND Kate Beckinsale. I’m going to the first showing!

I’ll be there! It has already received rave reviews and looks like an outstanding movie.

i might… it doesnt look that good.

I agree DiCaprio isn’t that great (c’mon! He doesn’t even look like Huges!), but I’d be willing to sit through it. It’d be interesting to see how computers have been used to recreate “extinct” aircraft (this movie and the upcoming “Flight of the Pheonix” come to mind.) The return of the epic WWII aviation film comes to mind.

“Battle of Britian” remake? (I haven’t seen the original, so I don’t know if that would be an interesting thing to do, or just mock the original.)

I’m sorry. I’m kind of an amature movie critic, so I’m kind of enjoying this! [:D]

I don’t know if they could do a remake of the BoB without it being a shadow of the original… one, all the AC in the original were real, a lot of them today would have to be computer generated, and based on what I saw in “Pearl Harbor” that leaves something to be desired. Even the R/C Stukas in the original movie weren’t too badly done…

Second I dont think Leonardo DiCaprio could replace the likes of Lawrence Olivier, Michael Caine, Trevor Howard, Nigel Patrick, Christopher Plummer et al.

Some really big names who either were, or became the best actors for many a year…

But as for the movie, I am torn… one I dont think I could see another movie with Leonardo Dicapprio in it… two it would probably dissapoint me and I would feel less dissapointed with a 3 dollar rental than a 7 dollar movie ticket plus snacks. (Plus if it’s really bad, on DVD I can drink myself into a numb state and be able to finish it all…)

I know that I won’t see it,I don’t like charater assinition type moives. But I did like the one about H.H. that was done by Tommy Lee Jones back in the late 70’s early 80’s.Digger

I really want to know what they did as far as building the XF-11 mockups. That was one COOOOOL airplane.

One one hand, airplanes AND Kate Beckinsale. On the other, that snot-nosed little martinet, LeoNARD-o DiCRAPrio.

Maybe I’ll wait for the DVD.

Yeah! I’ll see it.

For starters, I like Leonardo DiCaprio. I think he’s a good actor. Kate Beckinsale is easy on the eyes. I really liked her in “Much Ado About Nothing,” wich I think was her first movie. The subject matter is interesting, and the planes look awesome.

What’s not to like?

Regards,

I always use www.rottentomtoes.com to see what the consensus is among movie reviewers. While I don’t think any one can rely on one reviewer’s opinion, with what it costs for a movie today I want to get several opinions before I put out money to see it.

Guys,

I think the Aviator will be a pretty good movie in spite of having Leo in it. The only worthwhile thing he has done is Catch Me If You Can. I cheered when he died in Titanic. Between the a/c, Kate AND Gwen Stefani it should be pretty good. As for the Flight of the Phoenix I have my doubts. I saw a preview recently and it seems they took a lot of artistic license with it and I mean a lot.

I’ve thought about going. Still not sure as yet. Where do you get to see a movie for $7 these days? The best part of Tityanic for me was the nude scene. She was HOTTTTTTTT!!!

Sometimes it’s best to leave well enough alone. Some of these remakes(in my opinion) are doomed from the start. "Flight of the Phoenix " without Jimmy Stewart and the immediate post-war conflict between the German engineer and the rest of the survivors; not interested. “Battle of Britain” without Michael Caine and Robert Shaw? Can’t be done. Other goodies they had best not touch;
“The Enemy Below”, “Sahara”, “Twelve O’Clock High”, and my personal favorite’
“The Blue Max”. “Midway” could do with a makeover. Sort of what “Saving Private Ryan” did for “The Longest Day”. “Pearl Harbor” killed me…what flavor Drano were those guys drinking?

ooooh that would be SWEET! a makeover of midway a little more fluid, less dramatic scenes in the briefing room and more meat and potatos type planning and decision making. And I would hope better computer generated A/C too… I know there is enough “Japanese” modified planes (Thinking of the CAF “Tora Tora Tora” group) out there to do the japanese side, but it might be hard to find enough Wildcats, Dauntlesses and Avengers, even mock-ups to make believe a real battle. There’s only so many times you can cut and paste clips of the same SBD before you realize it is all one big group of the same plane I would think…

Hollywood go figure with all the remakes. There are hardly any original ideals any more unless it has a lot of sex and violence to it.Oh I forgot, bringing out the bad in people of the past instead of the good or what they accomplished.Digger

Yeah, Leo is two and half strikes against any movie that he is in. Putting good airplane shots in it erases two of those. I’ll probably go see it for the airplanes and maybe a little skin. A new Midway! Now there is an idea whose time has come. The Navy was so monotonouse with color schemes and markings during WW-II that one plane could can be reincarnated with the computer and you can’t tell the difference anyway. The most you have to do change the nose #, if it even has one.
