The albatross around your neck. . .

Okay, we’ve all got one.

That one partially finished kit, the one you haven’t touched in years. It’s within arm’s reach, and every so often you take it out, look it over, shake your head, and put it back. Maybe it’s poor kit quality, maybe you just got off on the wrong foot with it. You know you’ll probably never finish it, but yet you just can’t bring yourself to throw it out, or consign it to the spares box. What is it?

Mine is an AMT/Ertl Klingon battle cruiser. It’s been “under construction” for nearly ten years. Maybe it’s the powder blue styrene it’s molded in, or maybe it’s the lousy fit, but I just can’t bring myself to finish it. What’s yours??

Just one Albatross !!! I must have 10 of them kicking around the storage room. There’s a Matilda, a Crusader, M13/40 Carro Armato, Somua, etc. I at least looked at them this very week … just to transfer them into a new box. Oh well, one of these days, just like I said 10 years ago when I started them.

I have to echo Robert on this one, unfortunately… My most famous albatrosses are:

1/72 Space Shuttle… awaiting a decision about which mission to model for over 7 years…

1/9 scratch figure of Yoko Tsuno (a famous comic strip character in Belgium)… primed but awaiting painting since '98 …

1/35 IS-3; the Tamiya kit, with scratchbuilt engine, and all details inside… awaiting painting for the last 4 years

1/100 Boeing 727-100; the old cr.py VEB kit, all opened up and everything down, awaiting I don’t know what since '99…

Special Hobby’s 1/72 Hiller UH-12 Helicopter.Vac. form canopie, and not good at working with that stuff.

Just one right now-the AMT/ERTL M60 w/ the Blazer armor. Been trying to decide for the last 7 years or so whether to model it with or without the applique armor.

The airfix kit of the HMS Bounty. Maybe I’ll just model the moment they burned it off of Pitcairn Island. It’ll be a performance piece…

Now, is it the Airfix AC-130 Gunship with the broken props, or the Hasegawa F14 Bombcat that I screwed up the paint job on and lost an ejection seat for?

Nah, definitely the AC-130!

I like to think of them as my ready assembled spares box!

I’ve got several on hold now, but the one that’s been sitting the longest (2+ years) that I’m not sure will ever get finished is AMT’s '48 Ford Woody. It’s a great kit and all and I’ve even got the paint for it, but I just can’t seem to get as interested in it now as I did when I first got it. Maybe it’s the thought of all that wood paneling that needs to be fitted into the sides. I was going to replace the decals with real wood from old cigar tubes or veneer sheets.

Rick

Everything I’ve touched in the last 5 years.

Got a Monogram Firebolt jet car kit that has been in a continuous state of flux for over a year and a half now. It’s had three different primer coats, but then I get dissatisfied with something or other and off comes the paint. It’ll be there when my family buries me, but that darned car stays on the bench and out of my coffin!!!

Mine’s the Airfix 1/72 Halifax kit, must have the worst fitting canopy I’ve ever seen and I don’t have the time/money/materials/knowhow to make/buy a new one! So it sits there and looks at me reproachfully with a couple of turrets and the internals done, and probably will continue to do so for some time!
