I send this out to a thank you to all because I don’t know who told me how to do it but, I really screwed this Trumpeter 1/32 F4F-4 Wildcat up. I had oversprayed the lower windows with gray paint, one after coating with future, one before.
The only way to get the paint off the uncoated one was to use mineral spirits, but all I had was lacquar thinner. Yep, OOPS. Clear, soft plastic and lacquar thinner don’t mix. I screwed the window up big time. But I remember that I read here in one of these topics about fixing clear plastic. So I sanded with 1000 grit, then 1500 grit, then 2000 grit, then buffed, then coated with future and presto, scratches gone. Here are 3 progress pics. of the one of the lower windows the one on the starboard side was the one I screwed up.
Looking great!
Hey Tim, glad you can salvage the Wildcat. Everybody messes up once in a while, but at least this will have a happy ending. Want to see pics of the finished model.
Best wishes from warm & sunny SE Michigan.
Looking good Tim!!! Not too bad at all!!! Can’t wait for the finished product, and I’m glad that you were able to fix 'er up!!!
One of lifes less painful lessons. One learns without suffering any lasting damage!!! Glad you were able to salvage the situation

It feels great when we can save a model after messing it up and almost loosing hope on it doesn’t it?
It looks great so far, Tim.
The nice thing about learning from mistakes is you know what to do if they happen again. Sounds like you found success!
Regards, Dan
Nice looking work Tim… consider your experience a lesson learned, which makes it a GOOD experience.
Now… that looks like MY work desk!! [:o]
Take care and thanks for posting your update! [:)]
Take care,
Frank
You got it going on, Tim!
Thanks for all the kind words guys. I’ve learned so much since I became a member of this forum.
It must be going to really turn out, ‘cause it’ making you work for it![(-D]
Thanks for the look. NICE rescue!
Glad you could salvage it. Cant wait for the finished pics!
Nice job, therriman ! That kit looks SO much better than the old Revell kit (built that one as a kid when it came out…memories…) Glad you were able to save the window. The members at this site are ALWAYS willing to help.
How are the ejector pin marks on that kit? My Rufe had them all over the place !
Keep up the good work. Looking forward to seeing this bird finished !
They’re all over the place here too. Thankfully most of them were hidden, and not to deep. Kit is a good kit overall, although the fit of the cockpit into the fuselage was poor (just like the FSM review said). The headrest wall around the back of the cockpit took quite a bit of filler. But I’m enjoying this build.
