Some Tiger and Panther kits by Tamiya and Italeri have zimmerit texture moulded into the hull. My question is can you base coat and camoflauge these tanks and still see the moulded zimmerit texture after painting??
Thanks!

To my knowledge, no Tamiya kit has ever had moulded zimm. However, if you are referring to rough cast or rolled armour textures, yes, this can be painted without obscuring the texture.
EDIT: There are some 1/72 and 1/48 scale kits with moulded zimm, which can be painted without obscuring the texture, so 1/35 shouldn’t be a problem.
Hey Leddy,
As concerns the Italeri kits, yes, you can base coat, camouflage and weather the kit and still see the zimmerit quite well. I’ve built a couple of their Panthers and one Tiger and not had any problems.

Leddy, if you’re using the Italeri add-on zimmerit, make sure you thin it down by taping it securely , zimm-side up, to a flat surface, and then rubbing the back on a piece of sandpaper to get it to scale-thickness. Once you get it reduced to wafer-thin, it is extremely realistic and can be chipped and damaged with an exacto blade quite convincingly!
I’ve try doing zimmerit coating on a wirbelwind, but it was out of scale, but I found a great way of removing it, just cover it with liquid glue and since its dried you just pled it with a hobby knife.
Any adivise of doing zimmer coat?
Wait - tape it down and then sand the back?
yeah, like tape the zimm-side to a board, and then tape the sandpaper to another board, and then mash the two together like Zimmerit-love [:X] and that will evenly thin it down across the breadth of it–works like a charm. I did my Panther A “Ernst Barkmann” like this and it looked great! Note the chipped zimm on the front, and the correct scale thickness of it? (–something others have criticized as “too thick” if you apply it “as is”)
what is the best way to cut the pattern?
Uh, it comes pre-cut, if I remember? When its been thinned, just score it with the ol’ #11 blade and that should do it.
the one i picked up just has rectangular pieces that need cut out. i doubt ill use it but who knows
Hmmm, yeah that’d be tough…I have one of those kits to, and it makes nice scrap![(-D]
That’s one of those “marketing success stories” where they market it so well that you think you need it and then when you get it, you realize that it’s complelely impractical! It MIGHT work on a Pz IV hull though? I think you’d have to REALLY, REALLY need to be super-economical to put yourself through all the measuring, thinning, cutting and filing to go that route vs a pre-cut AM kit!
yah but it came with some other stuff i will probably use
