I’ve been reading that these paints are good to use as a wash. I went onto the Pearl Art Supply site and noticed the wide variety of colors and I have some questions. What kind of paint is this Tempura Paint and can it be used as a base coat?
I think I’m going to stop at Pearl on the way home and see what they have.
Well unfortunately the Pearl Art Supply store in Woodbridge, NJ only has the store fixtures left.[:(] I haven’t been there in about a year but it is a shame that it’s closed. They not only had an incredibly large selection of art stuff with great prices they had some model stuff as well.
I guess I’ll have to go to Micheal’s tomorrow.
I thought I had heard something about Pearl closing recently now that you mention it.
I don’t think I ever bought anything from them but I used to have one of their catalogs and they were in business for a long time if memory serves me. It’s sad how this economy has shut down a lot of businesses.
They still have six stores according to their web site.
I have never heard of using tempura paints as a wash, where did you read/hear that? I guess they are water based acrylics right? So they could be used that way. Never would have thought of that. If you do use them as a wash, please post some pics!
After doing more research it seems that Tempura is not good for the base color on a project. As far as a wash goes it seams difficult to use unless you experiment a lot in order to get the right technique.
I had some doubts, but never ignore a possible new technique! If you don’t want to use the commonly accepted oil paint washes, I still use inks and or acrylic paint washes from my days paintin warhammer 40k and fantasy figurines. Mix a good acrylic paint like vallejo or citadel with a bit of distilled water and a mixing medium. P3 from privateeer press actually calls their stuff mixing medium. Goldens makes an acrylic flow release that works well too. Make it thin, then lather the model down. When she’s dry, you get an overall dirty look, with some darker shadows in the recesses due to pooling.
Hope this helps, I could talk about inking and washing all day! It’s the ONLY good way to get a feeling of depth when painting 28mm figurines!

I use Createx T-shirt airbrush paints.
It is a water based acrylic and it doesn’t adhere real well to the Future coating on the kit.
Get a small bottle of black and brown at Michaels and use it as a wash.
I dont think Pearl or anybody will have any “Tempura” paints…i dont know what deep frying batter has to do with paint…Oh wait…you mean “Tempera” paints…i bet you could find that easily enough…

.It is unfortunate about Pearl closing…they had everything in the store here 1/2 off…i got a ton of different stuff cheap…then they went whole hog and 75% off…I missed the beginning of that and by the time i got there all the airbrushes were gone…you should have checked it out MikeV…$500 brushes…$125…I did get the whole head assembly and needle for my badger 100rh for about $6.00…cant go wrong with that…
Do you cut the Createx with anything to thin it down for the wash?
I mix it 2 parts water to 1 part Createx and put a drop of Dawn dishwashing liquid in it.
Like I said it doesn’t stick real well which is good and bad. Good because it’s easy to wipe the excess off of panel lines, bad because you can easily wipe too much off. [;)]
I’m going to pick up a tube of oil and some creatix tomorrow and try them out on some old models with no wash. I was at my parents house this weekend and found a couple of boxes of built kits.
