This build was fun, it came out looking better than I expected. This was a first for me, as I’ve never built something this scale before and have it turn out as well as it did. I was hesitant to build another bi-plane as I built one from a Revell kit that never worked out. The Revell kit had shortcomings with the braces that hold the wings together, they were too flimsy to hold the wings together and ended up breaking and bending.
I heard great reviews about this Academy kit and decided to give bi-planes in general another go.
I used a mix of tamiya and vallejo model color acrylics, with a vallejo acrylic primer. I did a gloss coat for the decal placement and then a dull coat after the decals were set.
This was the first time I’ve cut a decal that was on top of a panel line after it dried, and the decal did not disastrously tear or disintegrate. I used Microset and Microsol successfully for the decals.
I think I’d like to make more in this scale in the future.
I remember that kit. Its a good one alright. Goes together well and has an easy paint scheme.
They are notoriously tricky to build in this scale, aren’t they? lol
I’ve got the Academy SPaD XIII in the que and have some of it assembled. That one doesn’t fit as well and its a slow build with all of the stuff I’ve had to fix. The EP marks are in the most difficult places on that kit lol. Then it has that five color camouflage that’s going to be tricky when the model is closer to 1/76 scale and not true 1/72. Its smaller than my Albatros lol.
Good looking crate you have there. If I ever find that kit again I’ll have to pick it up. Memories.
Nice build Ahren! A good scale to pick as there is plenty of variety to choose from. Love them but the old eyes and hands are not working with me so I’m finishing up the 1/72 I have and slowly switching to 1/48. Keep up the good work.
No, my mistake. It has only three colors, but no color callouts for what colors to use lol. I’m guessing which colors look good and I’m going with that. Yeah, every little crate needs a buddy!
I would like to find that old Revell Neuport 17 again as well.
