I bought that new Tiger I kit from Dragon about 2 weeks ago (didn’t even know it was in such demand…it just caught my eye)…it was only $33 including tax[8D]
Anyways, while I’m trying to decide which unit to represent with it, I’ve started to research diffrent companies/materials pertaining to Zimmerit…so which is the best medium for this…resin or photo etched?
and since this is a new Tiger kit…would Zimmerit created for other companies’ Tiger kits fit well?..or am I better off just buying a sheet or two and cutting it by hand?
Deicide- are you referring to Dragon’s Tiger initial (the 3 in 1 kit) or the Tiger (p)? The Initial Tigers did not have zimmerit, but the Tiger (P) did. Zimmerit was not introduced until 1943 (check out the history- http://www.panzerworld.net/zimmerit.html). As for options, I have done PE and resin and I prefer the resin. The PE looks too uniform and not as realistic, in my opinion. Cavalier and Atak makes nice resin zimmerit. As for it fitting the Dragon Tiger P kit , the Tiger P was on a Porsche chassis, so there would be a lot of mixing and matching needed to be done. It has been suggested that perhaps combining Elefant zimm and tiger zimm would work, but I haven’t researched it. There is a third way–using putty and a PE zimmerit tool. This is the most accurate looking way to do it, but it takes a lot of practice. I did a Panther A in this manner and it took a little to get the hang of it. Hope this helps. Also, Dragon is coming out with a Tiger Late which would have zimmerit. As for existing sets fitting it, I just don’t know. I do know the turret of the dragon has a slightly different shape (it is assymetrical as opposed to Tamiya’s incorrect symetrical shape)
I’m talking about the 3 in 1 kit…I’m not sure wich unit had the initial Tigers on the eastern front and applied the Zimmerit in the field (502 or 503), I’m going to have to research that a bit…
