Tarps and Netting

Hello all,

I asked about this before and I did not write down what to do. How do you make tarps for covering various armor pieces and the netting to drape. I was thinking of using tissue paper, wetting it down and gluing in place, but then i feel the paint would bleed through to the armor.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

You are on the right track. You need to use tissue paper and diluted white glue (PVA Glue, such as Elmers school glue or some equivelant brand). Roll/form the tissue paper (not toilet paper, it falls apart when wet) into the shape desired, soak it with the diluted glue, about 50/50 glue to water. Shape on vehicle, and remove to let dry. Once dry, paint, weather and reattach to model. That is all there is to it.

Thanks heavy, got all that stuff at home.

Just a note, When you have rolled your tarp, dont dip it into the glue mixture, I used and eye dropper and placed a few dots on the tarp and it work great.

For camo netting I use Cheesecloth. Cut it into your desiered shape and either roll it up or drape it over you model or wherever. then once it has dried, take it off of the model and spray some OD or dark Green paint on it. It should hold the form it has created from the model. then just glue it back into place.

tack cloth should have the same effect as cheese cloth.

You could also use medical gauze (used for bandages) to the same effect.
As for tarps, I mix up some water and white glue, then actually colour the mixture appropriately by adding some tamiya acrylics until it is opaque enough. At that point, I ‘paint’ the tissue while it is lying on a flat piece of board, then CAREFULLY apply to the model. I allow it to dry, and if neccessary, touch up any thin spots with paint.

Next Time “She who must be obeyed” goes to the fabric shop, oops, well you could call it quality time. anyway, check out the vale meterial. makes great netting. You will also find chains, and fine copper wiring. Pick up one of those emergency sewing kits. I find it handy dandy. I will make a hole just big enough to get a needle through for a wire harness. Also a snap to run tie down ropes through grab handles.

I save time by taking a piece of tissue, laying it on top of what I want to cover, or the tarp supports, and eyedropping my white glue/water mix onto the tissue. Once it gets wet, it will sag down an conform to the shape. I just leave it there in place and when it’s dry, I simply paint and weather.

Rolls: A little bit of fun scratching these if you want to…take some of the foam that you get when you open up a box of new electronic equipment ie TV. The thin foam that is wrapped around the equipment is excellent for making rolls. Cut a small piece, fold in the edges on two sides, either glue or tape them down. Now roll up the foam. Take some fine wire, wrap both ends and keep twisting the wire. This will creat folds in the foam. Once you’re happy, snip the wire. I then stick the roll on a toothpick, and paint and weather.

For Netting, I typed this out in the Dio Forum, hope it helps!
Russ taught me this, when you want to lay your netting, here’s a quick and easy (although messy) way. Take a cup, add what every color paint you want…here I used just brown acryllic paint, add some water and white glue. Thoughouly mix, and add your netting. Mix it well with your hands until the netting has been “stained” with the paint. Now, take the netting, and wring it out with your hands, but leave some moisture. Place where desired, and let dry. Boom, the netting will stay in place when dry, hard as a rock, and then I just drybrush some cammo patterns and I’m done.
