When doing European tanks, I observed some local construction equipment to see how dirty the tracks and undersides are.(similiar climate) I noticed that they generally collect a layer of caked on mud and dirt underneath and in behind the tracks. Do tanks serving in Iraq/Kuwait/ Saudi get a similiar layer of caked on dirt, or since there isn’t much moisture, are they just dusty?? Thanks
I was there for Desert Storm. When it rained we got mud in all the normal places. When it was dry we had very little dirt. The sand was course enough that it was not that dusty. If you were driving up and down the supply highway through the sand, it became a dusty mess at times as all the traffic powdered the sand. By and large though I was surprised at how little sand and dust accumulated on my M60A1.
Thanks! That is what I am doing- Academy’s M60. Would just spraying some buff on the lower hull and wheels be enough?
That would be about right from my experience.
Did you ever get that Panther zim varified? I said ah heck and I went with Atak zim.
I said the heck with it and picked up some Cavalier zimm. I got the early, so I need to modify it a little, but at least it isn’t diamond shaped!
We had a stupid amount of dust accumulate on the back of our Abrams, so much so that you couldn’t see the tail lights at night!
NTM
The dust gets everywhere, it actually kind of greys the paint on the vehicles. During the fall and winter when it rains, there is mud, but the worst thing that I found was the tan-grey goo that covered everything. Not quite sand, not quite mud. It resembled winter road spray from the states, just alot more of it. It cover everything from the wheel line of my trucks down.
The graying of the paint was due to the oil soot particales mixing with the rain and staining the paint. My uniforms were obviously grayed. No matter how many times I washed them, they stayed gray tinted.
thanks guys! They gray tint is something I never would have thought of. Now to figure out how exactly to do it
never mind wrong stuff]
My green humvee would get covered in the gray stuff you guys are talking about. Almost like cement and just about as hard to get off it seemed. LOL The backs of the tracked vehicles get dusty in the summer. The same goes for the insides of wheel wells, and the outside of fenders behind the wheels for wheeled vehicles. In the winter when it rains, it is a light tan that covers everything. I hated getting that crap on my boots, it weighs a fricken ton and sticks like crazy.
So would January-February be considered rainy season?
dont forget good ol march it is wet to
Jason, Would you like me to send you some photos of my M60A1 during Desert Storm? Send me your Email address if you would like the photos. Greg.

I’m also in the process of building the m-60A1, so would it be possible for you to send those photographs to me aswell???

Rainy season is from November to early March. Then it goes from pleasantly cool to hot in about two weeks. The creeks that were around my FOB didnt dry up until late May.
It started raining about Thanksgiving and it would just dump on us. I would have never guessed that the damn desert would get soooo much rain. While in Kuwait wating to go home late January it rained for two solid days, and I mean a HARD rain. We got into country the end of January of the prior year and we didnt realy see any rain until Thanksgiving. There were lakes everywhere when we left. LMAO and I thought the army had lost its mind when it issued us DCU gortex before we left.
We were issued two sets of desert utilities , one nomex suit, one parka with liner and one desert booney hat and that was all. We never got another issue or exchange. By the 4th month on our tanks our uniforms were worn out, ripped and torn. We wore what pieces were still serviceable. Talk about mix and match we looked like modern pirates. The Army would not let us into their rest camp/ recreation facility because none of us could piece together a serviceable uniform. Such is the lot of Uncle Sams Misguided Children(USMC)
