Tamiyas Mig 15... FINALLY!!

Howdy all,

It sure has been awhile since I visited these parts… Ugh There are a few on here that I kept in contact with but in the last year and half, I have delt with a divorce!! In the end, I owe her nothing and I have a beautiful son which I share joint custody & 50% residential custody which makes me one excited Daddy!! Still can’t believe Aaron will be 3 this Nov… Geez

Anywho… This is my first build from start to finish with out any interruptions[;)] I decided to go with Tamiyas Mig 15 in 1/48th scale out of the box and YES, an all NMF…!!

I figured what the heck, might as well go for it so I tried out Alclad and let me tell ya, what an exceptional paint to work with as well as to handle with no ware. Very very nice[bow]

To check for seams n such, I used MM’s Russian topside gray. From there I went a different route and instead of using Alclad black, I used Testers gloss white, black and gray for the various panels! But I used the topside gray as the primary basecoat. The outcome was rather shocking because I was not sure what the effects would be?? The various panel tones are very subtle yet stand out at the same time!! I was not going for a definite contrast but mellow in tone which I achieved

As for using my “sludge wash” for the panel lines I again turned to another avenue. My friend at my LHS introduced me to Tempera paints which is essentially for kids! WOW does it work and how easy it is to use!! I am sure some of you and maybe all have heard of this but this was my first time at bat with this!

So with out delay, here she is dressed in the markings of my ancestors homeland of Poland!! The unit is unknown.

Enjoy and thank you!! Any questions, please do not hesitate to ask!

Looks like you’ve still got it, Mike! Nice build. I take it the tonal variations are more evident in person? Anyway, looks great, glad to see you finished one!

Hey Max,

Thank you very much my friend and much appreciated. Yea the variations are slight and it is more noticeable in person.

The ailerons on the main wings and horizontal stabs are based in black as well as the panel right below the speed brakes.

The panel on the top of the fuselage near tail is white as well as the panels on the front portion near the wing tips.

Other panels are done in gray which is harder to see but I like how she turned out!! And yes, I too am glad I got one done!! On to the other three I started before the divorce lol… All for Grp builds too…

Thanks again

Excellent Build Mike [tup]. The subtle tones with the NMF look great.

Thank you very much Rick!! Much appreciated… Looking forward to doing more NMF’d a/c!!

Thanks again my friend

Hi Mike, and welcome back. Youve been missed buddy. Glad youve sorted things out homewise.

What a comeback build. I built Tamiya Mig a while back and compared to yours, i was just messin around. Shes a stunner. I love the tonal variations. Very subtle but very noticable. On my P-51 (Thx for the niceties btw) i sprayed the whole thing X-1 Black as a base for my NMF, i think ill use your method next time. Much better look to the plane. I like the blue you used for the pit and the weathering. Hell, its all good. Very nice.

…Guy

Mike- Man, it sure is good to see your work here again! I really have missed seeing your aircraft. Have you worked on that 1/32 F-16 at all lately? I really can’t wait to see that one again. [:P]

I love this MiG, awesome stuff! Glad to see you haven’t lost it my friend. The subtleness of the shading, and the simple but effective base really make this an amazing piece of work. [bow]

Very nice! It’s mighty shiny! [:)]

Looks great! [tup]

The panels are subtle but I can see that they stand out when viewed from different angles. Very nice effect!

Definitely a sweet lookin’ Mig you’ve got there!

very nicely done [tup]

Nice Migski there Mike. Good to see you back in the proverbial saddle. ALclad sure is sweet stuff and you’ve knocked it out of the park first time out.

Good work

Hi there! wellcome back to the forum! and let´s see in a future if you can turn Aaron on to the dark side (modeling of corse) LOL

The kit looks great! The Mig-15 is one of my favourites jets, and yours came out great! The MNF is flawless and as you, I love thos alclad paints… great choice of markings too!

congratulations!

best regards

Jeremias

Howdy Guy,

I’ve missed you guys too and I am very stoked about being back with the family[;)]

Thank you very much for the compliments!! Much appreciated. I was a little bit nervous with using the Alclad but I sucked it up and went for it!

But there are a few things that I did in the preparations that I know now not to do… Basically doing lighter coats for a gradual build up and masking for the pre shading!! Next I will try the glass black as a base coat because the areas that I did use black, gave it a more deeper colour look as well as a used look!!

As for the blue, it’s MMs underside blue(2123) with USSR underside blue highlights by Poly Scale.

I’d like to see your 15 some time!!

Thanks again Guy!!

Frank ol boy,

Laughs lost it? I think I did that when I married my ex[:P] Even though the Mig turned out a lot better than I thought, there are still some minor flaws that should have been corrected but went unnoticed… But in all I am rather pleased and thank you for your kind words!!

I too like how the base turned out as well but do you know how hard it was not to do a grass strip?!?!? Hahaha

As for the F-16 build, it’s slowly but surely coming along!! I am going to post a new thread soon as a Part 2 or something in that order… The fuselage is all together as well as for the main wings and vertical tail… Last week I did the ejection seat which turned out pretty slick!!

A new thread to come shortly!!

Jon, Jeremy & TC,

Thank you very much guys for the compliments… Glad you liked!!

Jeremy,

One thing I noticed when using that black Tempera paint as a wash, it also tinted the main colour and gave it that natural used look!! You should give this stuff a whirl!! Easy to use too

Justen my man,

Thank you for your compliment about the use of Alclad!! I was actually going to use the polished aluminum but went with the regular aluminum instead! However my next NMF a/c will be done up in Polished aluminum…

Way back when I did a sample of this stuff and it did not work all to well so I shy’d away from it until now!! Geez look what I was missing out on and look at the missed oportunities I had with the NM a/c that I wanted to do!! Ggrrr Second time is a charm I say!!

Oh on a side note and you better be sitting down!! I got an email from Steve-O!! He’s alive and has come back to mother earth!! Lol

Hey Jeremias,

Thank you for the warm welcome back!! It’s good to be back here at the home!![;)] As for Aaron, I am not going to push him but what ever he decides to build I’ll be happy!! As long as he does not get addicted to video games!!

As with the Alclad, I know. As I mentioned to Justen about being a little affraid of this stuff… Man was I wrong!! I feel it’s a lot better than MM metalizers for the most part!

I see another Mig in my soon future and yes it’ll be Polish… However it will be a Mig 17 this time!! I like the Polish a/c too for some reason!! Ya kno, Poland is the only country that is sponsored by Petagree Dog Chow[(-D]

Thanks again to one and all!!

Mike, first of all glad your home situation is better now and welcome back to the forums, you were greatly missed.

On the Mig front, great build and its a honey of a finish and very clean. The panells came out great and some day I have to use the tempra paints for a wash. Always thought about getting some alcad but it scares me. What do you clean the A/B with after using the stuff.

Steve

Hey Steve,

Thank you very much for the kind words, very much appreciated!! Yea it’s great to be back in the saddle again!!

As for the Alclad, I just used Testers thinner(the one that’s in the red can) and since Alclad is thinner than water, it was easy to clean up!

Like some piants, if you have to hold the build the paint will eventually ware off!! Well not this stuff!! I only tried it once but from then on in I used nice soft cotton gloves!!

For my first NMF build, I am pretty pleased with it!! Thank you again and glad you liked!!

Good to hear from you again Mike - and like Frank - I too was wondering about that F-16 that we saw started a while back.

I’ve got a 1/72 scale F-16N that I’m working on that was inspired by some aggressor photo’s that you posted around the time that you were working on yours. A green/grey splinter sceme

Just wondering - when using Aclad, do you have to coat it with some kinda clear coat or something before the tempera goes on ? Those shots with the black tempera smudged on are mighty scary [:O] , but the finished product is most excellent !

Chris

PS: Rocon’s comin up

Now, that’s a beauty! Mig 15, one of the very few jet aircrafts that I like. This is the first time I see builded a Mig15 in polish markings… very interesting! The NMF also great! I love it!

Congrats for your Mig!

Mike my friend, you nailed it! Looks like your back with a vengance! Welcome back, and glad to see such a nice wingy thing done by you. Now if I ever finish just one, I can start on mine!. Anyway congrats on the freedom thing ,and again, welcome “HOME”…Harv

Hey Chris,

Thank you thank you!! As for the F-16, it’s still coming along! Like I mentioned to Frank, I’ll be making a second posting with this… Glad I got you motivated with a 16 build!! Hope to see it soon!!

As for the Alclad, no need for a clear coat or anything of that sort. I used the Temera right over the Alclade! Same went with the decals!

Haha I will have to agree, the shots with the temera does look pretty scary!! BUT really really easy to work with and yes, easily can be removed!

Ah yes, Rocon!! Might see you there!!

Thank you again Chris for your kind words!!

Hey Von Alfa,

Yea I will totally have to agree with you, not everyday do you see a Mig dressed up in Polish markings!! She sure is a beaut though!!

Thank you for the kind words!!

Howdy Harv,

As Aerosmith put it, Back in the saddle again!![:P] Yea I am so glad things are over n done with!! Time to move on and enjoy Aaron, the fam as awell as building!! Out of everything, I missed the building becasue that was my vent!! Ggrrr

Anywho, hurry up n finish so youy can start your Mig!! Glad you liked my Mig!!
