Tamiya tape for Alclad?

Hi all.

Witch of the range of tamiya masking tapes is the least tacky and safe to use with Alclad 2?

I have Tamiya gloss black enamel as a bese for pollished allu Alclad as we can’t get the alclad primers or clearcoats here, just getting regular alclad is a mission!

In the pats I had Alclad lifting away from the undercoat (granted it was a gloss Future coat, and I used regular automotive fine line masking tape) and would like to get some input please.

The Tamiya gloss black went on extremely smooth and glossy. I will leave it for 3 days to FULLY cure before trying any alclads

Thanx

Theuns,

I’ve had success using Tamiya’s tapes over Alclad. Just to be safe though, I usually tack the tape to my skin or clothing before laying it on the paint. It takes off enough of the tackiness to reduce the chances of it lifting off the paint, but retains enough “stick” to prevent the covering paint from bleeding under.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

exactly what oor said.

Assuming you intend to use a “regular” Alclad shade, such as Aluminum, Duraluminum etc…you should be fine with Tamiya tape. Remember that Tamiya tape is designed for modeling and serves this purpose well. In my opinion, there’s no real substitute for it in scale modeling. That said, the high shine Alclad II finishes, such as Chrome or Highly Polished Aluminum, are a bit more fragile for some reason so I would be careful and use oortiz’s suggestion.

Good Luck,

Joe

Thanx gus, yes this Mirage 3 will be in pollished allu. I will do a few tests with removing the “tackyness” on a scrap piece first.

I have not used Tamiya tapes before due to it’s rather high price here, but I would rather invest in some than damage the paintwork.
