Tamiya Quad Gun Tractor details

I heard mentions that the Tamiya Quad Gun Tractor and 25 pounder was the only kit available of those in 1/35th, and that while the gun was good, it really needed a PE set to top it up.

Who makes those PE sets for it?

I’m working on the gun right now. The detail is pretty good. What part of the model are you planning on adding PE to?

I can post some detail pics if you want a close up of something in particular.

good luck,

Well, I was sort of thinking the whole thing, Quad, Gun, and Limber.

Pic’s would be great, thanks.

gun is 2/3 done, limber and tractor still on sprues

My gun is setup in action, you can choose to have it deployed with the skid down or up in towing mode.

Looks good. I saw this kit a few days ago. Fairly priced too.

I bought the gun cheap but it did not come with the quad tractor. I purchased a 6pdr gun and a quad tractor separately. I also picked up a tamiya desert rats figure set to add to the gun crews… did someone say Tobruk?

I’m currently finishing up a Marder2 and I enjoyed working on its gun details. I think this post has moved my 25pdr up near the top of my “to finish” list.

Teddy,

Eduard makes a kit #35 444 - Quad Gun tractor only

There is an Italeri kit as well kickingt around - but without the gun

Good luck

Hey that looks cool. I havent made it into the quad yet, just the gun and some figure work.

Let’s see if Teddy buys that and posts some pics for us

I built both of the gun tractors a few years ago as well as the 25 lber.

The 25 lber is not a bad kit considering its age. The one drawback is that it is engineered to be built in the firing position. If you want to build the towed configuration, you will have to do a little modifying to get it correct.

The Tamiya tractor also builds up nice OOB.

The Italeri tractor is (I believe) the old Peerless Max kit and though a little more fidgety it still builds nicely. The Italeri version represents the Canadian Military Pattern Cab 13 variant which is different from the Tamiya offering whih is IIRC the Ford FGT version.

Here’s a pic of the Italeri kit

Built the tractor, limber and gun OOB several years ago. Excellent fit, good detail, and builds into a really nice model. I put the “Mickey Mouse” camouflage pattern on the tractor. This was also my first experience with Tamiya acrylics.

Robert, I had no trouble building the gun straight OOB in the tow position. What modifications did you have to make?

Muzzleflash,
Nice, clean build, but a couple observations:

  1. There are two punch-out (ejector pin) holes on both upper corners of the gun shield.
  2. There’s excess plastic from the tree removal left on both handwheels.
  3. You have a big sinkhole on the breech.
  4. The seat appears to still have some flash around its circumference.
  5. There’s a seam on the barrel/carriage bracket, and on the barrel just fore and aft of the bracket.
  6. Check your axles. There appear to be seams there as well.

Don’t mean to be picky…just thought you’ld like to know some areas to improve in. PE sets can be added, but unless the basics in construction are taken care of, they don’t add to the aesthetics of the model.

If I get the money, I will build it, but I’d probably have to order the PE for it though.

Found their set for the gun, #35 473

Gip - probably falls under the category of rivet counting (which in itself is kind of embarrasing) but the changes are:

  1. on the outside of the trails are handles that are used to lift the base ring up to a towed postion. These handles needed repositioning and chains attached that accomodate the lift and help to stow the ring while it’s in the towed position.
  2. all around the ring are a series of hooks that are used in the lift.

Pretty minor stuff but otherwise the ring is just kind of hanging there with no true attachment to the gun itself.

yeah styrene i know about those sinkholes. They arent too bad to clean up. It sure is al lot easier to see them when you post a macro image at about 4times orig. size of the model!!! hehehe

The gun shield and some of the other parts are not glued yet b/c I knew I still needed to clean them up, i will post more pics after I do more work to the gun.

PE might be overkill for the gun, I stil lthink the detail is quite good.

Thanks, Robert; I don’t really consider that rivet counting. I mounted the ring to the top of the tractor. Yes, it looked sort of strange with no handles or attachment points, but, like the gun, everything was/is OOB.

Muzzleflash88,
Looking foward to seeing the update pics. I bet she’ll be a beaut.! If the PE set works well for you, I may have to think about building that kit all over again!
