Hey all, this is Tamiya’s old Pz. II painted in a one-tone Afrika Corps scheme. The only things left to do here are to apply the decals(once I f**king find them!!![banghead]) Finish painting the lefthand side of the tracks, and finish painting the on-vehicle-equipment.
I really tried hard here to eliminate the dreaded “monotone” effect that is commonly seen on one-tone vehicles. Since this vehicle was used in North Africa, I primarily used light colors to eliminate the monotone, and no rust was added, but a pencil was used heavily to convey the many scratches it probably would have gotten while essentially being sandblasted all day from movement. It was first pre-shaded using Panzer-Gray(I dont have black[banghead]) and then sprayed with a semi-heavy basecoat of Dark Yellow, followed by a very heavy coat of oil blackwash sprayed with an airbrush, which essentially turned the entire model a kind of brownish color, but once it was oversprayed with basecoat again, I achieved the effect I wanted, all the recesses were finely shaded while the higher areas were lighter than everything else. Once the airbrushing was done it was given a wash of yellow-ochre, to convey dust and to highlight some of the areas where sand might have gathered. Then a very locally applied blackwash helped to convey some of the dirtier parts of the vehicle, where the crew might have stepped, such as the fenders. When that was all completely dry I finally gave it a very heavy dusting of white pastel powder, which, if used correctly, can convey sand and dust very well, at least in my opinion[swg] I really hope I captured the look of a desert vehicle here and the model is not monotone! Let me know what you think.
BTW, sorry about pic quality, my lighting isnt the greatest =(
Tigertankman. nice work on the paint! hard to work on older kits isn’t it. do to so many things that are wrong with them. but a great paint job always kick’s butt on older kits. hey i have that kit i’ll look and see if i have the decals if so you can have them if you want. let me know. clay
That’s pretty good, but I think the washes and the white pastel powder may have reduced contrast somewhat beyond what you were looking for. I’d be the first to agree that it’s difficult to avoid monochrome effects on single-colour paint schemes. Also, it’s possible that your photo lighting may have reduced the level of contrast on the finish.
I think I perhaps went some of the way to achieving a slightly greater level of contrast, and lesser degree on monotonality, on this AFV Club Sd.Kfz.11:
I started with a base coat of Humbrol matt black enamel. all subsequent coats were Tamiya acrylics. I applied them in the folowing order: Red-brown, Dark Yellow, Buff and Deck Tan, with each colour coverling slightly less than the previous one, and concentrting the lighter colours on the centres of panels, and the last two particularly on those areas which would receive most exposure to the sun. I then reduced contrast with a very light overspray of Buff. Light weathering only (this was a review build) was done with Conte Crayon dust and Tamiya weathering powders.
I like it…used but not too abused. That main armament is crying out to be drilled though. I havent got any micro drills and a pin vise yet (next item on my shopping list)
