Hello all, I really like the product, it os very smooth and sands easily. Being a curious guy I try to look for ways to make the seam filling job even easier.

So I was wondering if Tamiya putty could be thinned with anything to assist in getting into tighter places…I did the unusual man thing and actually read the tube. Information said that the putty can be thinned with Tamiya La cquer thinner.

My question is Tamiya’s lacquer thinner just the brand put to normal lacquer thinner or is it " speacial formula" only for Tamiya products?

I have and use occasionally Tamiya acrylics and have the thinner for them however I haven’t seen thier lacquer thinner.

Try it and see. On a test hulk, of course. I like Tamiya Putty “ok”. My one beef with it is that it gets stiff quickly out of the tube, including the blob I put down on the palette.

Tamiya LT is specific to the brand, but again, try it and see.

Never had a problem thinning Tamiya putty with the cheap lacquer thinner I pick up at Walmart. Works just fine with this application.

Thanks G, KT, you guys are awesome. Got a hulk and will try my cheap Ace Hardware lacquer thinner. If I’m smart I will post my experience back here to help others.

That would be helpful. It’s always good to hear how these experiments turn out, good or bad.

I’ve used acetone (nail polish remover) out of the bottle. I’m not clever enough to come up with this myself, so must have learned this from somebody here.

It also works on a cotton swab to smooth out a joint puttied with tamiya, if you don’t wait too long.

That said, please don’t take my word. Try it on a junk test assembly first. Make sure it works for you. And don’t overdo it, seems to me acetone is pretty hot.

Stik, Greg, thank you, yes I will try to provide a summary of how it works for me. Greg, acetone…hadn’t thought of that, I use it frequently at my job…never thought to use it as a thinner. MEK on the other hand WOW now that stuff will eat almost anything. I WILL TRY to keep y’all posted.

Just another angle, and I learned it quite by accident, but liquid model cement. It works really good with Squadron putties, green and white, as a thinner. Try different liquid model cements with Tamiya putty if you have no luck with other methods.

I have used the liquid model cement whick is basically the chemical MEK and lacquer thinner. They both work great at thinning the putty and the thinned putty is very good also.
