Tamiya Panzer IV Ausf. D (updated 10/14/07)

Well I got this a while back on Ebay and then got a TriStar Wheel set for the Panzer IV from Great Model .

and I also got a set of details for the Panzer that was a seperate tamiya set also bought from Great Model as well.

well I did do one side of the hull already with the TriStar set.

please do note that the TriStar replacement parts are molded in tan.

and here is the “before” pic even though it is only the other side of the hull LOL.

yeah I know the pic isn’t that good but I’ll probably take some better ones later once my 2 million candle power spotlight finishes charging. (the pics were taken in normal room lighting)

Hey guys I’m not kidding I’m probably going to use it to add more light so details might show better.

Mike, if you’d get a simple piece of posterboard and lean it against the washer there (instead of using it as a “base”!) you’ll get much better light distribution from whatever light source you use; BTW I’ve used that wheel set; pretty cool…just don’t paint the rubber parts of the wheels before you try to slip them on–the tolerances are so tight that you’ll never get ;em on!

I no idea how bright 2 million candle power is in relation to regular lights, but it does seem like one needs to put a lot of light on a subject to get a decent photo. I made an FSM inspired photo booth and what I use for lighting are two 8" reflector work lights and a single 12" reflector work light, each with a 100W bulb. With the three lights positioned 12" - 18" from the model, I find that I have enough light, but certainly not an excessively so.

did you try sanding the hubs first before painting? generally that works well enough to allow it to slip on. And I’ll probably only be temporarily using the Tamiya rubber band tracks till I get some money together to pick up a aftermarket track set.

Are you sure you want to drop some cash on aftermarket tracks for this old girl?–she’s pretty long in the tooth, and the detail is pretty soft by today’s standards; you might better build this, lovingly, OOB and pick up one of the Tristar or DML releases and go all out on that; you’ll have a kit then that really would merit the investment of aftermarket tracks, esp. if you’re going with Frooly’s…

well finally got some work done on this and am satisfied with where I am going with this. Some things to note if others are doing this OOB. The lower hull was molded for the Panzer IV Ausf E-H because the Box Art shows the detail that is on the lower hull matches lhe line drawings on the Tristar wheel set to a “T”. And also the suspension is for the later model Panzers as well (well the road wheels were the same on all models) the disc (I think it is the lubricant resivour) on the front of the Road wheel suspension (the part that moves) should have sunken in details the raised detail was found on the Ausf E-H. So well here are the pics.

Alot of blood sweat and tears went into the removal of the molded on detail that needed to be removed to give this kit a much needed face lift. (literally I had a mishap with the Xacto chisel blade that left me with a cut finger.)

Oh and another thing to note The Ausf D went through several track updates in its career starting with the 36cm track up to 1941 and the 40cm track from 1941 to whenever the Ausf D was replaced by the Ausf E.

…okay, let’s get back to the lighting and background issues…I gotta say that the washer and a/c box are better as a backdrop than the leopard spotted bedspread, but you still gotta go with a plain background as doog said or else we won’t be able to comment very accurately on what you are posting…

Hello everybody!

I just bought this one too. Can it be painted with a winter scheme? In some videos I thought I saw some D’s painted white.

Thanks a lot!

I believe you can according to the Dragon Panzer IV Ausf.D painting guide. Pretty much the winter scheme is nothing much but white wash anyways.
